The hike up the Bleckwand is a really beautiful and leisurely tour with fantastic views. You walk over hill and dale along a forest path and past beautiful alpine meadows past the Bleckwandhütte, continuing via the Bleckwandfenster to the summit cross at 1541 metres.

I had been planning a hike up the Bleckwand for a long time, but somehow I never got round to it. But finally the time had come. It really is a great path that takes you to the top and once you've arrived, you're rewarded with a fantastic view. An ideal tour for me and my 12-year-old dog, Emma. There was also a highlight at the end of the tour, but more on that later.

Directions and parking facilities

By car:

As is often the case, the first route is via the A1 motorway to the Mondsee exit. Immediately after the exit, there is a roundabout where you take the first exit. Continue straight on until you reach the lake and then turn right onto the B154, which you follow for around 30 kilometres. Continue past Egelsee and Krotensee until you reach the roundabout at Spar Claudia Hechenblaikner. Take the third exit here and follow the B158 for around 8 kilometres. If you want to walk the Bleckwand from the bottom, you can park here. For us, however, we went a little further. We turned right onto Gschwendt. This is the only downside if you want to do the short hike up the Bleckwand. You have to drive up via a toll road (for a fee). This costs €5, and from there it is about 5.5 kilometres to the Bleckwand car park.

By public transport:

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a connection to get to the car park by public transport.

Car parking facilities:

There are several car parks; it depends on how big you have planned your tour. Our option was the Bleckwand car park, which is at the top. Parking is free and there is space for about 8-10 cars.

Route description and key data for the hike up the Bleckwand

Starting from the Bleckwand car park, a beautiful forest path leads you uphill. Follow this for around 800 metres and cross a forest road. Now you come to a beautiful alpine meadow, which you stay on until you reach the Bleckwandhütte after five minutes. Here you can enjoy the view and the moment. The route continues uphill over hill and dale, the steepest section in my opinion. But don't panic, after just half a kilometre you've managed this section and continue along the forest road for a short stretch. After about ten minutes on this path, a red-white-red flag points you to the left.

The trail continues uphill through a forest and after a short while you can see the clearing. Once you reach the top, you continue along a beautiful alpine meadow for another 500 metres, past the Bleckwandfenster and up to the summit cross. You have reached your destination and can now recharge your batteries until the descent begins. Here you have two options: a great circular route, which I only discovered afterwards, or you can take the same route back again. As we only knew this route, we opted for this option for the hike up the Bleckwand.

Refreshment stops and what else awaits you

The Bleckwandhütte is expected to be closed until summer 2026 due to a general renovation. It is located about halfway from the starting point. As soon as it is open again, you can take a short break there and enjoy the view from the terrace.

The Bleckwandhütte

Unfortunately currently closed due to renovation work. We are looking forward to summer 2026, when the gates will hopefully reopen.

Schwarzeneck hut

Open daily and only in good weather from 10:00 - 17:00.

In summer

For me, a huge plus point of a hiking tour is always the opportunity to cool down and refresh yourself afterwards. After the tour, you are right by Lake Wolfgangsee, where you can find a nice spot and relax at the end of the day.

Emma and my personal „highlight“ on the hike up the Bleckwand

As we were leaving the car park, there were already some cows lying in a meadow nearby. In principle, that's not a problem for me, but when I'm out and about with Emma, I always have a bad feeling about it. But the way to the summit cross wasn't a problem at all, and we didn't see any grazing cattle the whole way. But when we got back to the car park, I couldn't believe my eyes: eight to ten cows were standing around my car, drooling all over it.

The question now was: What should I do? Should I wait a little higher up until they had gone, or just walk right through the middle? So I grabbed Emma, picked her up (please don't imitate me) and walked her right through the middle. We quickly made our way to the car and I put Emma in the dog crate. From now on it was more relaxed for me too, and I had to wait another twenty minutes or so because there was a cow right outside the driver's door. The whole thing was actually completely harmless, but I had never experienced anything like it before, and in connection with Emma it was a little adventure and highlight for us.

My summary of the hike up the Bleckwand

For me, it was one of the best tours I've done in a long time. You can park at the bottom to stay on the road a little longer, and there are also one or two car parks on the toll road to the top to vary the hike up the Bleckwand a little. As Emma is a bit older and we haven't climbed that many mountains in 2024, we opted for the shorter route. It was absolutely the right decision. It's not too long, but you still have a few metres of elevation gain to contend with and are rewarded with a fantastic view at the end. The latter wasn't the case for us, but it was still a great experience.

The route to the top is varied and does not include any challenging passages where you have to climb. Forest paths, gravel paths and alpine meadows take you past the Bleckwandhütte and the Bleckwandfenster and lead you to the summit cross at 1541 metres. Yes, and our final highlight gave me a racing heart, but it will definitely remain unforgettable. I can only recommend the hike up the Bleckwand to anyone. I think it's one of the tours you should definitely have done.
