Der kleine Schönberg ist eine absolut tolle Wanderung für zwischendurch. Geübte Wander:innen schaffen diese sogar in unter 3 Stunden und können somit am Gratis Parkplatz (falls noch einer frei ist. ) beim Traunstein Umkehrplatz parken. Man kann den kleinen Schönberg auch ideal mit dem Miesweg kombinieren, welchen ich dieses Mal aber ausgelassen habe.

The hike up the Kleiner Schönberg

Gestartet habe ich am Traunstein Umkehrplatz. Leider habe ich keinen Gratis Parkplatz mehr bekommen. Anschließend bin ich direkt die Forststraße durch die zwei Tunnel in Richtung kleiner Schönberg gewandert.

Shaggy und ich haben für den Aufstieg den Waldweg gewählt und sind anschließend gemütlich über die Forststraße wieder abgestiegen. Beide Varianten sind für Kinder und Hunde geeignet, sofern diese bereits erfahren, geübt und ausdauernd sind.

Kurzer Hinweis: Der Aufstieg hats wirklich in sich. Er ist richtig knackig und ich kam ordentlich ins Schwitzen. Am Weg befindet sich zwar ein Notausgang Schild, aber der Schein trügt. Dieses Schild markierte nämlich nicht den Notausgang, sondern zeigte in Richtung Gipfel, wo es immer steiler und anstrengender wurde.

Achtung: Wer mit Hund wandern geht und anschließend noch den Miesweg machen möchte, sollte bedenken, dass dort zwei Leitern zu passieren sind und der Hund gegebenenfalls hinaufgetragen werden muss. Ansonsten einfach den Miesweg auslassen.

Die Anfahrt erfolgt über Gmunden in Richtung Traunstein. Direkt beim Traunstein Umkehrplatz stehen sowohl kostenlose Kurzparkplätze mit einer maximalen Parkdauer von drei Stunden als auch gebührenpflichtige Parkplätze zur Verfügung.

I have long dreamed of the Traunstein (affectionately called Trauni or simply the Stein) and now the time had finally come.

The Traunstein is counted among the most dangerous mountains in the Salzkammergut and claims many injuries and even fatalities every year. Although that is – with very good preparation – No need to panic, but respect should definitely be maintained. Since it was personally my first time going up too, I completed the entire hike at my absolute comfortable pace. I simply didn't want to risk exhausting myself too quickly and then end up with too little energy for the descent.

I chose the route up via the Naturfreundesteig and down via the Mair Alm. That is probably the most popular loop and is definitely recommended.

Kleiner Hinweis: Der Naturfreundesteig ist kein Klettersteig. Das ist eine ausgesetzte alpine Route mit seilversicherten Stellen. Eine Kletterausrüstung ist daher nicht zwingend erforderlich. Wer eine verwenden möchte, sollte das aber unbedingt auch tun. Der Steig ist nur für absolut geübte, ausdauernde und trittsichere Wander:innen ohne Höhenangst geeignet. Wer diese Voraussetzungen nicht erfüllt, sollte den Steig generell nicht wählen.

The hike up the Traunstein via the Naturfreundesteig

The best-known ascent is probably the one via the Naturfreundesteig. Here, you’re treated to fantastic views of Lake Traunsee and the surrounding countryside throughout the hike. However, the trail is also very challenging, exposed for most of the way, and should therefore not be underestimated. Both the ascent and the descent via the Mair Alm require the utmost concentration. I would definitely not recommend the Naturfreundesteig to casual walkers for the descent. Whilst experienced walkers may find it less of a problem, I personally would not go down that route.

Since the Naturfreundesteig is also permanently in the sun, it is particularly worthwhile to start very early in the summer. Furthermore, the Naturfreundesteig is exposed throughout and has wire rope safety fixtures in a great many places. Many well-known crux sections must therefore be negotiated with the utmost caution!

Nach ca. 2,5 Stunden kam ich bereits beim Naturfreundehaus vorbei. Hier habe ich die Gelegenheit genutzt, mich aufzuwärmen, da es an diesem Tag etwas windig war, und habe mir einen Verlängerten gegönnt. Danach noch kurz das Tshirt gewechselt und anschließend die nächsten 30 Minuten durch eine tolle Berglandschaft zum Gipfelkreuz gewandert. Auf diesem Weg kommst du außerdem an der Gmundnerhütte vorbei, wo du selbstverständlich ebenfalls eine Pause einlegen kannst.

The descent via the Mair Alm took about 2.5 hours. I thought the path was really great, although complete concentration was required here too.

Alternativ kannst du auch über den Hernlersteig auf oder absteigen. Das probiere ich beim nächsten Mal aus.

Preparation and equipment for the Traunstein

As a general rule, you should make sure you’re fully prepared for the trip. I spent three days studying the weather – using various weather apps, webcams and cloud images. I also checked the forecast from the Unwetterzentrale every day. Of course, that might be a bit over-cautious, but I didn’t want to get stuck on the trail in a thunderstorm.

I’d also recommend tackling other mountains in the area first, so you can better gauge your own stamina. Whilst the Traunstein is technically much more demanding, the Schafberg, Brunnkogel and Feuerkogel are good starter mountains in terms of stamina and concentration. I’ve been doing sport for several years now and have already climbed a few mountains – I tackled the Traunstein at exactly the right time, as it wouldn’t have been a good idea any earlier. You simply mustn’t forget that you need experience and, above all, plenty of stamina – otherwise you’ll run out of energy quickly and end up needing help.

Recommended equipment for your hike

I can only speak for myself, but I would take the following kit with me, at the very least:

1 bis 2 Ersatz Tshirts
dünne Jacke oder Windbreaker
Haube oder Schlauchschal
Notfall Biwak und Erste Hilfe Set
Jause oder kleine Snacks beziehungsweise Riegel

Was ich nicht dabei hatte und beim Abstieg sehr bereut habe, waren Hiking or trail running poles. I would definitely take these with me, then.

Directions and parking facilities for the Traunstein

Access is possible both by car and by public transport. Those arriving by car should arrive on site as early as possible to secure a parking space at the Traunstein turning area. The day ticket currently costs €30 (as of summer 2026). Those who park further ahead in the free short-stay parking zone must also expect a fine of €30 after three hours.

Es war eine der schönsten Wanderungen – wenn nicht sogar die schönste – die ich je gemacht habe. Der Weg war ordentlich fordernd und der Muskelkater hielt noch ein paar Tage an. Der Steig ist ausgesetzt und definitiv nichts für schwache Nerven. Oben wirst du dann aber mit einem perfekten Panorama belohnt. Wie bereits in der Einleitung erwähnt: If you bring respect, you don't need to panic about the Traunstein.

Der Traunstein wird definitiv in meine To Do Liste für regelmäßige Gipfel aufgenommen. Das wird ab jetzt bestimmt öfter mein Ziel werden.

Der Beitrag Traunstein – Wanderung auf den Wächter des Salzkammerguts erschien zuerst auf muats drawig.

Ehrlicherweise war diese Wanderung ziemlich unnötig. Der Weg ist durchgehend steil, anstrengend und ohne Aussicht. Startet man – wie ich – von der Burgruine aus, geht ein Jägersteig bis zur Scharnsteiner Spitze rauf. Ich bin zwar froh, den Gipfel abgehakt zu haben, kann ihn aber wirklich nicht weiterempfehlen, wenn man sich eine schöne Aussicht oder eine schöne Wanderung erwartet. Da gibt es in der Umgebung viel schönere Gipfel, die man unbedingt gesehen haben muss.

Gestartet vom Parkplatz in der Nähe der Burgruine ging es erst mal rauf zur Ruine. Die Ruine ist echt etwas Besonderes. Sie sieht toll aus und auch der Ausblick ist durchaus schön. Wer hier noch nicht war: absolute Empfehlung!

Die Wanderung selbst ging dann durch den Wald rauf bis zur Scharnsteiner Spitze. Es gibt noch einen Gipfel in der Nähe der Ruine, welchen ich aber übersehen habe. Oben angekommen gibt es leider auch keine wirklich besondere Aussicht. Gelohnt hat es sich nur für die Bewegung und das Workout.

Warum schreib ich dann eigentlich diesen Beitrag? Naja, nur weils mir nicht so gefallen hat, heißt es ja nicht, dass es dir nicht doch gefallen könnte.

Leider war diese Tour nicht wirklich besonders. Bin trotzdem froh, ein cooles Feierabend-Workout gemacht zu haben. Also: Kann man machen, muss man aber nicht. Die Ruine ist jedoch definitiv sehenswert!

Der Beitrag Scharnsteiner Spitze – eine Wanderung, die man ruhig auslassen kann. 😂 erschien zuerst auf muats drawig.

I had already been to the Großer Schoberstein with Shaggy in winter, including the Mahdlgupf, and I had decided that if I ever came here alone, I would try the Kleiner Schoberstein too. In fact, I turned back at the start of the Kleiner Schoberstein because I found it far too steep and dangerous. The Kleiner Schoberstein is NOT recommended if you don't have sufficient experience with very exposed sections, as there is a high risk of falling.

The Großer Schoberstein, on the other hand, is really great. There are also some exposed sections here, which are manageable for me if you are careful.

The hike to the Großer Schoberstein

The hike can be ideally combined with many other peaks. The most common ones are Mahdlgupf, Dachsteinblick, and Brennerin. For me, however, the one peak was perfectly sufficient on this day.

The start is in Weißenbach am Attersee and it goes directly through the forest, continuously and relatively steeply uphill, until you reach the rock at the top. From there the view is absolutely brilliant and it's not far to the summit.

When you reach the top, it gets a bit steep and also involves some scrambling. In my opinion, it's relatively safe if you have a good foot and head for heights, until you finally reach the summit.

Wer möchte, kann sich nach der Wanderung dann natürlich noch im Attersee abkühlen.

Coming from Vienna, I took the Schörfling motorway exit. If I were travelling from Salzburg, I would probably exit at Mondsee and then continue on the main road from whichever exit I took to the car park.

This time it was off to Beilstein – a small, great summit with a beautiful view.

The descent is a little creepy, as the forest is very dark and lonely. I did, however, only go down again after sunset.

The hike up the Beilstein

The route starts from the large car park marked as the starting point in the Komoot tour. From there, you head directly onto a forest path that is very overgrown and little used. After about 45 to 60 minutes, you'll reach the summit via forest tracks and further woodland sections, where you'll be rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view.

Caution: There are many fallen trees on the path. Caution is advised here.

The Kaltenbachwildnis is one of my favourite places in the Salzkammergut. It's no wonder, then, that there are already numerous posts on the blog. For example, combinations with the Surprise or Schlosskogel, or even with both. You can also easily combine them with the Miesweg or even the Grünberg and the Laudachsee.

However, for those who only want a short trip: the Kaltenbachwilderness alone is absolutely breathtaking.

In this post, I'll just show you the view of the Traunsee. The Kaltenbach wilderness itself is beautiful, and I just thought I didn't want to take away your 'wow' moment. Visit the place and enjoy the surprise.

I find the Kaltenbach wilderness simply wonderful. Right next to the Traunsee with bathing facilities, a beautiful little path and also relatively quick to hike. Please don't forget that it's still a hike and should be classified as alpine, even if it's rather easy.

I think this place is simply ideal for recharging my batteries. I really enjoy being here!

Der Beitrag Sonnenuntergangswanderung im Salzkammergut – die Kaltenbachwildnis am Traunsee erschien zuerst auf muats drawig.

Near the Almsee are the picturesque Ödseen. Even though they've long ceased to be a secret tip (so it's worth starting early in the morning), they haven't lost any of their magic. The two lakes, surrounded by crystal-clear and crystal-blue streams as well as a waterfall, make this corner of the earth something very special. A very short and absolutely recommendable hike for young and old.

Warning: There is no mobile phone reception at the Ödseen!

The hike to the Ödseen lakes in the Salzkammergut

Anyone who wants to visit the Ödseen can do so very easily. The only prerequisite is that you must arrive by car or bicycle (if you don't want to walk up from the main road). The circular path itself is easy and should not be a problem for most people (basic fitness is, of course, a prerequisite).

For those who wish to extend the hike, you can go up to the Herrentisch. We didn't do this as I am still injured in the leg, but this would only be a small detour.

We started at the car park near Almtalerhaus and initially headed through the forest towards the Kleiner Ödsee. Afterwards, we rejoined the road (watch out – best to avoid in summer with a dog), before turning off towards the Großer Ödsee. There's another option via a footpath, but we wanted to do the circular route this time.

Just before you reach the large Ödsee, there’s a waterfall, and this forest path then takes you back to the small Ödsee and on to the starting point. As always, you’ll find the Komoot tour at the very bottom of the post.

Throughout the hike, you'll repeatedly pass by great viewpoints and can enjoy the sight of the lakes. Shaggy also took every opportunity to cool off in all the waters. We also made a new friend:

Getting there and parking for the hike to the Ödseen lakes

The journey can be made by car or bicycle. You can park directly at the start of the hike (see my Komoot tour below). The Ödseen are located in the direction of Almsee – shortly before Almsee, the road goes left up to the Ödseen. You can start navigation directly from the Komoot app by selecting „Anfahrt“ (Directions).

Anyone who is hungry and thirsty can directly – either before or after the hike – at the start/finish I'm at the Almtalerhaus Stop by. There's a vegan lentil dal for your hunger and also some cool, refreshing drinks.

I found the short, refreshing tour truly wonderful. I was here 6 years ago and it certainly won't be the last time. My absolute highlight was all the butterflies and also the wonderful colours of the entire landscape.

Anyone wanting to go for a short hike (or as I like to call it: an Alpine stroll) will be absolutely right on the Miesweg. Here you get everything you want: Alpine passages (including ladders), great views, water, walkways. and that's in just about an hour's walk.

Thus, the Miesweg is not only beautiful but also absolutely beginner-friendly. However, the right equipment, a head for heights and surefootedness are still prerequisites.

The hike along the Miesweg

The hike starts directly at the turnaround point of the Traunstein car park. I always like to take the path via the forest road up to the tunnel, as you pass the memorial stone for the Traunstein victims here and also find a spring with drinking water. Shortly before the tunnel, you then turn right onto the Miesweg.

The Miesweg path leads – almost kitschily – along the Traunsee, rewarding you with great views. At the end of the Miesweg, you can cool off in the Traunsee. And then you have a choice: either you go back the same way you came, or you take the stairs up and then go through the tunnel back along the forest road to the car park.

Directions and parking for Miesweg

The drive is directly via Gmunden, where you then drive along the lake to the car park at the turning point. Beware: The car park is subject to a charge (and it's quite expensive! The cheapest 5-hour ticket costs €15).

Further ahead, there are free parking spaces (for a maximum of 180 minutes) – however, they are taken very quickly.

However, you can also travel by public transport and a shuttle service.

Places to eat and drink on the Miesweg

There are no refreshment stops with vegetarian options on this hike. It's best to simply bring your own good snack and a nice coffee in a thermos flask – then you're definitely on the safe side.

My conclusion on the Miesweg

The Miesweg is one of my favourite spots. You can get here quite easily, complete the loop spontaneously and relatively quickly, and you have a fantastic view of the lake the whole way. The jetties are beautifully laid out and the hike itself is also a lot of fun.

Admittedly, we only visited 4 summits as we'd overlooked the Herrentisch. Below in my Komoot tour, I've already included the Herrentisch so you can do the 5-summit tour.

From the car park on the main road, we went straight up to the Schabenreitnerstein. From there, we continued towards the Pfannstein via the forest road (if you want to visit the Herrentisch, it comes before the Pfannstein), until we reached our destination, the Nackter Kalbling, via the rugged Kalbling.

The hike to the naked Kalbling in Steinbach am Ziehberg

The starting point is the car park, which you can also find as the starting point on my Komoot tour. Afterwards, it goes along the meadow to the Schabenreitnerstein (You can find your own blog post about it hereFor those undertaking the 5-Peak Tour, the Herrentisch is now the next peak.

Before and after the men's table, you arrive at the alm, where fantastic views of the surrounding mountains await you, before continuing on to the Pfannstein and then to the naked Kalbling.

A consistently great hike, and not exposed (exception: sure-footedness and a head for heights are necessary for the final metres to the summits). Regarding family-friendliness: I encountered families with children at all the summits. However, very good stamina is still necessary.

Just before the Naked Calf summit is the Rough Calf summit, which can be conquered as the penultimate peak.

At the summit of the bare Kalbling, you'll be greeted by a small, charming summit cross. The ridge leading to the summit cross is also absolutely picturesque, and the views of the surrounding landscape are magnificent.

The starting point for this hike is in Steinbach am Ziehberg. I parked in the free car parks directly on the main road, from where the tour begins immediately. You can find the exact starting point as usual in my Komoot tour below.

Those who want to use navigation directly can conveniently open the starting point via the Komoot app and be guided to the start of the hike.

Getting there by public transport is also entirely possible.

Refreshment stops during the hike to the Nackter Kalbling

There are no refreshment stops with vegetable-based options on this hike. Anyone wishing for a quick drink in between can do so at the Gradnalm on public holidays and at weekends. It's best to simply bring a good snack and a nice coffee in a thermos yourself; then you're definitely on the safe side.

Conclusion on the hike to the naked Kalbling

I was actually really pleasantly surprised. I've been planning this tour for a while (which makes it all the more annoying that I missed the men's table) and immediately took advantage of the good weather on the public holiday.

I'll definitely be back here, as I'd like to do the 5-summit tour as well.

The summit cross with a small window at the Steineck is truly something special. At the beginning of the year, Shaggy and I also tried our luck, but unfortunately, we weren't rewarded with a great view at the top, as the dense fog meant we could only see the cross – which was standing right in front of us. You can find the contribution from back then here.

This time, however, the effort was well worth it, because it was a fantastic summer day and the view was simply amazing! We already started at 06:30 so that we would be back at the car before the midday heat.

The hike to the Steineck

The start was right by the car park, see also my completed Komoot tour at the end. The route led us mostly through the forest and the path condition was consistently very pleasant. Good basic endurance, hiking experience and prior tour preparation are still necessary.

There were no exposed sections and the hike is also suitable for children and dogs, as long as they have a certain level of stamina. You can find the tour I did at the end of the blog post.

Those who are particularly motivated can also tackle the Jacksonstein and the Trapez, though I'm not familiar with these peaks, as we opted for the descent due to the heat. Please check beforehand whether these two peaks are suitable for you – I cannot say if they are exposed or not. I will visit them myself at a later date and report back. There is also an option to integrate the Laudachsee into a circular route – I don't know this path yet either.

Further down the Komoot tour, you'll find my starting point – this also corresponds to the tour's car park. Be aware: there are only a few parking spaces available, so it's worth arriving early.

My conclusion about this tour

The Steineck is a very popular (and also heavily visited) summit for good reason – the summit cross and the panoramic view are simply amazing. You can also extend the tour as you wish and add more great destinations. I will definitely come back here!
