For Shaggy and me, at the end of September, we went to the Schafberg mountain at beautiful weather – starting at the Schafbergbahn valley station.
Summer is now officially over and now it is also possible to take Shaggy with me on my hikes. We started right away with the Schafberg. I have already been to the Schafberg 2x by train and 1x on the Schafbergrun. This time it was supposed to be a normal hike. 😊 We started – just like on the Schafbergrun – right from the valley station.

The weather was an absolute dream. It was sunny and windless – both of which I had never experienced at Schafberg before 😂
We were practically alone at the summit (which is a rarity at Schafberg) – I’ll tell you how we managed that below. 😜
To be perfectly equipped, will you find all my equipment and all my recommendations here. I'm naturally updating the list all the time. 😀🙌
You absolutely have to watch my Reel about it on Instagram:
The hike to the Schafberg
Starting from the valley station, the trail goes up a relatively steep road until you reach the trailhead (be sure to check out my Komoot tour below). The hike itself is very challenging – it goes continuously uphill through a forest path with roots and small rocks. From the middle station, where the goal is already within reach, it goes up some more steep meters – which is quite annoying after you think you are almost there.

It took me about 2 hours to hike. It took me about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to the middle station and another 45 minutes to climb to the summit. For the Shafberg run, I needed 1 hour and 25 minutes for the entire route. However, Shaggy and I are fast walkers, so I would plan at least 3 hours of time for good condition.

How to get there and parking for the hike to Schafberg
When I travel with Shaggy, I generally travel by car. Unfortunately, he is a fearful dog and public transport is not possible with him. How to get to the starting point (Talstation Schafbergbahn) can be found by clicking on „Getting there“ at the end of the post. After that, the navigation app on the phone automatically starts.
The parking lot right at the entrance is subject to a fee.

Eating options during the hike to the Schafberg
Unfortunately, there are no dining options on this tour with a vegetarian selection. Should this change in the future, I will of course adjust the post accordingly. Therefore, I recommend bringing your own snack and enjoying it at the summit, for example. 🥪🍎

Summary of the hike to the Schafberg
The Schafberg is a very special destination with a fantastic panoramic view of some of the lakes in the Salzkammergut and also of the entire mountain landscape around the Schafberg. Anyone who has not been here should make up for it as soon as possible – whether on foot or by train.
Shaggy and I started very early and were at the top before the first train arrived – that’s why we had it to ourselves. 😊 Getting up early and going out is definitely worth it here. You can check the departure times on the website of the Schafbergbahn – the train takes about 30 minutes – so you know when you have to be there at the latest.
