Of course, we mustn't forget beautiful Salzburg, with all its great places and excursion destinations. That's why we were out and about for you in Weitwörth - Nußdorf and were enchanted by the Weitwörther Au circular trail

A really nice and cosy outing for the family. A short walk outside in nature to enjoy the peace and quiet. That's exactly what awaits you on this wonderful excursion tip. I walked a great circular route of just under 5 kilometres around the Weitwörther Ausee lake. But the Weitwörther Au circular trail offers so much more - many different and extensive paths, along the Salzach and all the way to Oberndorf.

Directions and parking facilities

By public transport:

You can reach your destination in 1 hour and 20 minutes by public transport. The first port of call here is always Salzburg Central Station, which you can of course also easily reach by ÖBB or Westbahn train. Here you board the Salzburger Lokalbahn S1 - Lamprechtshausen Bahnhof. After 22 minutes and 11 stops, you have already reached your destination. You are now at the starting point of our tour, Weitwörth - Nußdorf station.

By car:

But travelling by car is no witchcraft either. As is so often the case, you first take the A1 motorway in the direction of Salzburg. Follow this motorway until you reach the „Salzburg Nord“ exit. Keep left at the fork and follow the signs for Braunau and the Salzburg N/B156 junction. Continue on this road for about 2 kilometres until you reach a roundabout, where you take the third exit. After a short distance, turn right again towards Braunau/ Oberndorf/ Anthering. Now continue straight ahead for 11 kilometres on Lamprechtshausener Straße - there is a roundabout on this route, take the first exit here. After this stretch, take the exit towards Michaelbeuern/ Nußdorf a. Haunsberg and then turn left onto the Nußdorfer Landesstraße. Now just leave the roundabout at the second exit and you have reached your destination.

Car parking facilities:

I searched and researched for a really long time, but it looks like the official car park for the Weitwörth Au is the P+R car park at Weitwörth - Nußdorf station. You can park your car here free of charge. There is space for about 50 cars, which should easily be enough to find a spot for your car. For me, this is perfectly fine as there are really quite a few parking options here and it doesn't look like there will be any problems with space. Nevertheless, I don't want to give any false information. If this is not official parking for the Weitwörth Au, please let me know and contact us so that we can put this right.

Directions and key data for the Weitwörther Au circular trail

For once, there's not too much to tell here. The route I chose was actually the Auenerlebnisweg. The circular route around the Ausee is suitable for Visitors with restricted mobility (wheelchair, walking frame, ...) wonderfully suitable. Most of this barrier-free circuit consists of a great, firm gravel path. This is perfect for being mobile with a pushchair and getting from A to B without any problems.

Of course, a short detour to the Salzach was also a must. It flows along the border between Austria and Germany, just a 10-minute walk away. We walked along it for a short distance, following a forest path for a few hundred metres. Up to the Salzach platform at a viewpoint. A beautiful, stony sandbank invites you to take a short break here. This spot is simply marvellous. Enjoy the moment, but don't forget the time, we're only halfway there. On the way back, there are a few more places to rest with a fantastic view of the Weitwörther Ausee.

Refreshment stops and what else awaits you

Vogelhide on the Weitwörther Au circular trail

On a small peninsula in the Aussee lake, a bird hide - a sheltered, roofed shelter - allows the undisturbed observation of the bird world. Over 70 bird species breed in the Salzach floodplains, as well as migratory birds that rest in the lake. In addition to various species of ducks, greylag geese, cormorants, goosanders and great crested grebes on or in the water, various species of woodpecker can also be spotted in the surrounding trees from the hide.

Refreshment stops

The Weitwörther Au circular trail doesn't just have to be my 5 kilometre route. You can walk around endlessly and conjure up a huge tour. But what I definitely want to do on one of my next visits is the walk to Oberndorf near Salzburg or Laufen. It's a 50-minute walk along the Salzach to Oberndorf. The perfect route in summer. The Weitwörther Au has no refreshment stops, but it doesn't need them. The beautiful, approximately 4-kilometre-long trail takes you to more than just one restaurant. Yes, and what could be better than a short trip for a coffee or a delicious ice cream?.

The Silent Night Chapel

Of course, I also have a little attraction for you. As we all know, the best is saved for last. I didn't know this sight and the story behind it before, but I find it really interesting. The chapel is located in Oberndorf near Salzburg and is dedicated to the poet and composer of our beloved Christmas carol „Silent Night, Holy Night“. The song was performed here for the first time on 24 December 1818. If you are interested in such stories or buildings, I can only recommend that you pay a visit to the „Silent Night Chapel“.

My conclusion on the Weitwörther Au circular trail

For the most part, I am only travelling in Upper Austria and we have wonderful places and excursion destinations here. But after the Weitwörther Au circular route, I have to admit that Salzburg is in no way inferior. I find it an incredibly beautiful and cosy route. The peace and quiet that you rarely get to enjoy anywhere else. The trail, which has been designed with so much love, is simply fantastic.

There are also so many options here and you can really let off steam. Take the „Auenerlebnisweg“ or continue to the Salzach and extend the tour a little. If that's still not enough, simply take a walk to Oberndorf or Laufen. Here you can be enchanted by the pubs and fortify yourself with coffee or a delicious ice cream. You can explore the beautiful village of Laufen or visit the „Silent Night Chapel“. At this point, I can only tell you one thing - it was my first visit to Weitwörth, but definitely not my last.

If I have hit your taste with this tour, then the Hike up the Ameisstein and around the Almsee lake also like.
