A sunset hike up the Schober. An excursion that you should definitely do at least once. Short, crisp tour with a fantastic view.

I was on the Schober again at the beginning of April. It was actually a completely spontaneous activity. I felt like doing something sporty after work and then this great suggestion came from good friends. I didn't have to think about it for long. I got home from work, packed everything up and set off for the Schober. Even on the way up, we had a wonderful view of Lake Fuschl. The further we travelled towards the summit, the further the sun set. A perfect day, a perfect sunset hike up the Schober.

Directions & parking facilities

The easiest way to get to the Schober by car is via the A1 motorway. Travelling towards Salzburg, take the Thalgau exit. From here, follow the Enzersberg Landesstraße for about 2 kilometres and then turn right twice in quick succession. Follow this road for a good 7.5 kilometres, turn left at the „Ruine Wartenfels“ junction - just a little further and you have reached your destination.

Parking facilities

A gravel car park is available here. I haven't had any problems finding a space for my car during my visits and would therefore say that there are plenty of parking spaces available.

Route description for the sunset hike on the Schober

Starting point at the Schober - Frauenkopf car park. You first walk along a gravel path past the Wartenfells forester's lodge and then reach the castle ruins after around 15 minutes. You should definitely take some time here to enjoy the view. The route continues upwards along a beautiful forest path. After about half the distance, the soft ground turns more and more into a rocky landscape. Continue along steps and a narrow gravel path towards the summit cross. Along the way, you are rewarded with a marvellous view of Lake Fuschl. As the altitude increases, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. The final spurt - you have to master the last few metres over rocks and iron steps. But believe me, once you've reached the finish, it's all worth it. Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with a view you can't even imagine. A panoramic view, 5 lakes - the Fuschlsee, Mondsee, Wolfgangsee, Irrsee and the Attersee can be seen from here. Wondering what could top that? Turn it into a SUNSET HIKE up the Schober.😍

What you can look forward to on this hike

Wartenfels castle ruins

After a good 15 minutes' walk, you will reach the ruins of Wartenfels Castle. This alone would be worth a trip. Always great for me as an amateur photographer. Anyone who loves old buildings and ruins will be rewarded with a small but nice extra on their hike here.

Woman's head

You can also combine the hike up the Schober with a short diversions to the Frauenkopf. Normally, we always go up via the Wartenfels castle ruins and the way back takes us over the Frauenkopf. However, as we completed this tour at the beginning of April, there was still some snow and the path was slightly icy. At the summit, we were advised by a group of friendly hikers that we should use the same route for the descent. As we didn't know what the conditions were like, we naturally trusted them. But I don't want to withhold the other route from you. The Frauenkopf is a summit with a cross at 1304 metres. If you choose this route, you don't just get another summit cross to tick off. No, this turns the tour into a wonderful circular route with a diversion of just 15 - 20 minutes.

Refreshments & catering

The sunset hike up the Schober is a great place to stop for refreshments. The Wartenfels forester's lodge. It has been shining in new splendour since 2019. Not only a great way for hikers to round off the day perfectly, but also a great place for overnight stays.

If you want to know in advance what is on offer at Forsthaus Wartenfels, here are the menus for you to read - the lunch menu and the evening menu.

My summary of the sunset hike up the Schober

For me, the Schober is generally a really great mountain. It's not too long, good for an outing after work, but I still think it offers some challenging passages. You definitely realise that you've done something good for your body. For me, it's also one of the most beautiful views. You get to see 5 lakes at the summit. What makes the whole thing even better - why not try it at sunset? I have rarely seen such a beautiful view. As a dog person, I have to say that it's not possible with a dog and I wouldn't recommend the tour with small children either. Apart from that, I can only say - what are you waiting for? Get dressed, pack a torch for the way back and head up the Schober.
