Winter hike up the Buchberg between Attersee and St. Georgen - fantastic views included! ❄️⛰️🌤️
This time, Shaggy 🐶 and I headed up the Buchberg - a small mountain in the Salzkammergut region right next to Lake Attersee. As we always have a large blanket of fog blocking our view of the sun, we wanted to take the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the sun after all by covering the metres in altitude. We were not disappointed, as the view of the blanket of fog below us and the surrounding mountain landscape was an absolute dream. 🤩📸
Attention ⚠️: some sections of the forest were cordoned off - at the end of the article you will find my hiked and safe Komoot tour (as of December 2025). Please also keep to the barriers so as not to take any unnecessary risks.

Directions and parking options for the hike up the Buchberg 🚗🅿️
Getting there by car was relatively easy - we took the St. Georgen motorway exit and then drove towards Attersee am Attersee. We were able to park directly at the Atterseehalle, which was also the starting point of our tour. If there is no free parking here, you will find plenty of public (and paid) parking options along the lake.

The hike up the Buchberg on Lake Attersee in detail
The hike was a real highlight. ✨ It was a leisurely yet challenging excursion. The start at the beginning was a bit tough, but then became more and more leisurely as time went on. Unfortunately, it was very muddy in places and there were a lot of fallen trees in the forest and also partly on the path (which probably explains the current forestry work on certain sections). 🌲🌧️ You therefore need to take extra care here and in winter it certainly doesn't hurt to pack a pair of hiking boots for safety. Once I reached the top, I walked a short round via the (extremely small) Buchberg climb until I arrived at a snug and the summit cross. Generally speaking, it's a really great hike and highly recommended for in-between. 🫶🏼

Summary of the hike on the Buchberg in the Salzkammergut
I haven't been hiking for a while now, as my job and my studies have been a bit stressful recently. So this little hike was all the better to kick off the new muats drawig hiking season!
The Buchberg is absolutely recommendable. What surprised me, however: It wasn't particularly quiet at the summit, as you could actually hear the motorway all the time. But that didn't take anything away from the view. 🏞️👀
