For our little sunset hike this time we went to the Maisenkögerl, or as the locals would say: Moasnkegal. The breathtaking view was unforgettable.

Late February on a Wednesday: the sun is shining, spring is making an appearance and Shaggy and I knew that we had to head up a mountain straight after work. We decided on the short 3-summit tour on the Hamberg, whereby the third summit book was not a classic mountain summit, but rather a monument on the Hamberg. So the goals were set - we first went up the inconspicuous Hutkogel, then to the Maisenkögerl for the sunset and finally to the monument on the Hamberg.

What was really nice was that I met a few people who regularly follow my blog and videos. I always have a little surprise for people who approach me on the hike - so if you ever meet me somewhere, pick up your little hiking reward. 😊

The hike to the Maisenkögerl and Hutkogel & Hamberg in Scharnstein

Our tour started directly from the car park - you can find the detailed tour and our starting point below as a Komoot tour. You can even start the navigation to the starting point directly in the app.

The first summit was the Hutkogel, which is on the same path in the direction of Hochsalm. After about 2 kilometres and a somewhat steep climb of around 350 metres, you reach the summit. The view there is also really great.

We then continued to the Maisenkögerl, where an even more beautiful view awaited us - as the sun was already setting at this time. 🌅 The last section is somewhat exposed and requires surefootedness (risk of falling). Children or dogs should definitely be experienced and trained here. The view with the fog and sunset was simply indescribable.

Before the sun was completely gone, we made our way to our last destination: the monument on Hamberg. On the way there, the sky turned a dark orange colour and was another huge highlight for us.

Directions and parking facilities

The journey was easy via Vorchdorf - from here we headed towards Scharnstein. You drive a little way uphill until you reach the car park (see starting point of the hike in the Komoot tour). Please note: Parking spaces at the Maisenkögerl are limited.

It would be possible to travel to Scharnstein by public transport - but the starting point would still have to be reached by taxi or similar - or if you are really fit and have plenty of time, you can also start from the valley.

My summary of the hike to the Maisenkögerl and the Hutkogel

I really enjoyed the hike. Some of it is on the forest road, but the last sections to the summits are always forest paths. The Maisenkögerl requires a bit of scrambling on the rocks - you should definitely be free from giddiness, although in my opinion it can be managed well by experienced hikers.

I will definitely go on this after-work tour again.
