Walk up the Hohe Mauer in Scharnstein incl. Scharnsteiner Spitze & Scharnsteiner Blick

In mid-August, amidst an autumnal atmosphere, Shaggy and I headed up the Hohe Mauer.

Mid-August and already autumn? Yes, unfortunately! The hot temperatures in summer pushed nature to its limit – what looks like autumn was unfortunately actually the result of the long drought. But let's not talk about the climate today, but about the hike. 😄

Originally I actually planned to go up the Windhagkogel and include the Hohe Mauer only as a stopover – but upon arriving at the summit of the Hohe Mauer, dark storm clouds were already gathering over the surrounding mountain landscape. Therefore we decided (by we I mean Shaggy and me of course 😄) that we would take the direct route back down. We therefore skipped the Scharnsteiner Spitze (not exactly my favourite peak) – even though it would have only cost us a 5-minute detour. I have left it in the Komoot tour below for you.

Almost at the very bottom, we also took in the Scharnsteiner Blick, as we hadn't bagged that peak yet. ⛰️

The hike to the Hohe Mauer in Scharnstein

We started at the car park by the Scharnstein castle ruins – from here we headed straight towards the Windhagkogel, which is also signposted. On the way up you also pass a hunting lodge and later a nice cave. The mini-cave is just the thing for a short breather. 🤗

After the cave, it's just a few vertical metres to the Hohe Mauer, where you are then rewarded with a brilliant panoramic view. ⛰️

The descent then takes place via the Scharnsteiner Spitze, the Scharnsteiner Blick and the Scharnstein Castle ruins.

Directions and parking for the Hohe Mauer in Scharnstein

To get to the Hohe Mauer, take the Vorchdorf motorway exit and then follow the A-road to Scharnstein. You’ll find the car park right by the start of the walk in my Komoot tour. From there, you can use the ‘Directions’ feature to start navigating directly to the starting point. 🚗

Free parking is available at the starting point, though the number of spaces is limited.

Places to stop for refreshments during the hike to the Hohe Mauer

There are no refreshment stops on this hike. ⛰️ It's best to bring your own good snack and a nice coffee in a thermos flask, then you'll definitely be on the safe side. 🥪☕️

My conclusion on the hike up the Hohe Mauer

Shame about the weather not working out for going up the Windhagkogel – but all the better to be able to flexibly adjust the route here. It was a great hike and I'm looking at it positively: I get to come back here again whenever I want to do the big loop including the Windhagkogel and Hochsalm. 😄
