Shaggy and I were on the Großer Schoberstein and also on the Mahdlgupf at the end of January. Both peaks are located directly on Lake Attersee in the Salzkammergut.
Even though I particularly enjoy hiking in summer thanks to the picturesque landscape and great views (and temperatures), hiking in winter also has a certain charm. Shaggy and I enjoy being outdoors at any time of year and with the necessary safety equipment (e.g. Grödeln), we are well prepared for icy patches.
The path of the hike to the large Schoberstein and Mahdlgupf was really easy to walk this time - only the beginning was a bit icy (the first 400 metres). However, it was also possible to do this without climbing poles (but carefully). ❄️🐾
In case you're wondering how I keep fit in bad weather: Running is basically possible in any weather! 😂 But as I also love cycling, cycling is a great option for me. the Wahoo KICKR Core 2 (currently reduced by €150 😳) is exactly the right alternative. In combination with the ZWIFT app, for example, you also have playful and motivating content. A blog post will follow soon. (Advertising)

I've already posted a few reels about it - you can find one of them here:
The hike to the Großer Schoberstein and the Mahdlgupf in the Salzkammergut
We started directly at the car park in Weißenbach - by the way, you can find our complete tour further down in the blog post. I've put it together for you on Komoot and linked it below. 📍
The first section was a little icy, but no problem at all with hiking boots. After that, the entire hiking trail was ice-free and most of the snow was gone, or if there was still some snow left, it wasn't slippery. Only at the summit at Mahdlgupf was it slightly icy again - but I didn't need the Grödeln here either.
The first section takes you through the forest and later you reach the rocky section and scree. My highlight was the chamois 🦌, which I encountered at the beginning and later further up.

The journey to Weißenbach is quite simple. You can either come directly from Weißenbachtal or (coming from Linz) leave the motorway in Schörfling and drive along the Attersee. Coming from Salzburg, you can exit in Oberwang and then drive along the lakes to Weißenbach. I parked directly in the car park at the entrance (see Komoot tour below). 🚗

There are no refreshment stops on this hike. It's best to take your own snack with you and enjoy it at the top. 🍎🥖⛰️
My conclusion about the hike
The hike was a real highlight. The short section through the forest offered several views of Lake Attersee, but the view at the top was indescribable. The last stretch to the summit alone was a dream and you were also rewarded with a fantastic view of the surrounding mountain landscape. Definitely worth a hike and an absolute recommendation from me. 🫶
