Hike to the Großer Schoberstein – a great hike for in-between

I was again on the Großer Schoberstein (this time without another summit) with the start in Weißenbach am Attersee.

I had already been to the Großer Schoberstein with Shaggy in winter, including the Mahdlgupf, and I had decided that if I ever came here alone, I would try the Kleiner Schoberstein too. In fact, I turned back at the start of the Kleiner Schoberstein because I found it far too steep and dangerous. The Kleiner Schoberstein is NOT recommended if you don't have sufficient experience with very exposed sections, as there is a high risk of falling.

The Großer Schoberstein, on the other hand, is really great. There are also some exposed sections here, which are manageable for me if you are careful.

The hike to the Großer Schoberstein

The hike can be ideally combined with many other peaks. The most common ones are Mahdlgupf, Dachsteinblick, and Brennerin. For me, however, the one peak was perfectly sufficient on this day.

The start is in Weißenbach am Attersee and it goes directly through the forest, continuously and relatively steeply uphill, until you reach the rock at the top. From there the view is absolutely brilliant and it's not far to the summit.

When you reach the top, it gets a bit steep and also involves some scrambling. In my opinion, it's relatively safe if you have a good foot and head for heights, until you finally reach the summit.

Those who wish can, of course, cool off in the Attersee after the hike.

Directions and parking for reaching the Großer Schoberstein

Coming from Vienna, I took the Schörfling motorway exit. If I were travelling from Salzburg, I would probably exit at Mondsee and then continue on the main road from whichever exit I took to the car park.

Parking at the entry point is available, but limited and chargeable.

My conclusion about the hike at Attersee

I think the Großer Schoberstein is simply brilliant. I really enjoy it here. My favourite part is the last stretch after the forest, where you walk along the rock and can enjoy a wonderful view.
