🍁 An absolutely fantastic autumn hike in Micheldorf in Upper Austria on the K92 cultural trail, where you also pass Altpernstein Castle and can take a short break with a view of the historic building. 🏰

At the end of October, Jasmin and I went on a short hike to Altperstein Castle. As we have countless hiking routes and hiking opportunities in Upper Austria, it was immediately clear to us that this time we would choose a hike in our neighbourhood. Around 40 minutes away from us by car - in Micheldorf near Kirchdorf - we opted for the K92 cultural trail and have brought you some great impressions. 🌄

The trail is well marked and I can only recommend it for a nice autumn hike. Halfway through the hike and at the highest point, you will pass Altpernstein Castle. The hike also allows for many variations - you can extend the route with the neighbouring hiking & mountain tours. So there is definitely something for everyone. 🚶‍♂️

I would also like to recommend our Instagram reel in the next paragraph - if you like it, we would of course be delighted to receive a comment. Follow on our Insta page.

Directions and parking options for the hike

If you've already read a few of my posts, you'll know that I'm an absolute fan of public transport and use it wherever possible - especially as we have the climate ticket, which has already paid off several times for our trips. As the train connection from us to Micheldorf would take over 2 hours and therefore three times longer than by car, we decided to travel by car. We took the motorway towards Graz and left at Inzersdorf. At the roundabout in the direction of Kirchdorf, Micheldorf is just a few minutes away.

We parked in the church square - there is also a playground and a public toilet. 🅿️

However, if you are travelling from Linz, then the public transport alternative may well be of interest to you - check out the public transport options here in our OÖVV widget:

Route description - Cultural trail K92 in Micheldorf - Hike to Altpernstein Castle

Starting at the starting point, the church car park, we tackled the K92 hiking trail. The first section went through the settlement in Micheldorf until we reached the hiking trail. The hiking trail is closed to vehicles with a barrier, as the path is very badly damaged. It is not a problem for hiking as there is still enough space along the path and the damage to the road only affects vehicles. Nevertheless, you need to be careful not to step into a pothole at the beginning (but it is very easy to recognise and in my opinion not a real danger - but I would like to point this out anyway). ⚠️

The hike put me in an absolutely fantastic, warm and cosy autumn mood. I really enjoyed the hiking trail and could really savour it. The path is cosy and very inviting. 🌳

Halfway along the route, you pass Altpernstein Castle - despite its beauty from afar, it was unfortunately (I have to be honest) a huge disappointment for me. The castle is only open on Sundays in the summer months, and we chose this tour on the last day it was open so that we could see the castle from the inside and enjoy a cosy coffee. We were there an hour before it opened and waited for the time to pass, as it was a bit cold and we didn't want to miss out on the hot drink. The castle opened at 11:00 and when we took two steps into the castle, there was a notice saying „Closed today“. Just annoying for me. 😔

Despite my displeasure (why they hadn't already put the notice up outside) and having waited an hour for nothing, we continued along the hiking trail with motivation and enjoyed the second half of the tour. 🚶‍♀️

Don't get me wrong: It's fine with me if someone books a location for a wedding, for example, because that's completely legitimate - but then, for the sake of fairness to the hikers, this should be well communicated (social media, website, notice at the gate,...) 💒

Refreshment stops on the hike to Altpernstein Castle

The opportunity to stop off for refreshments at Altpernstein Castle was therefore not an option for us due to the closed society. The castle is also only open on Sundays, which is why I generally recommend taking a snack with you to be on the safe side. At the end of the tour, you can certainly stop off in Micheldorf or Kirchdorf (and the surrounding area) and enjoy a warm meal. 🥪

As we unfortunately couldn't find anything vegan for ourselves, we went back home after the tour and cooked something for ourselves - so unfortunately I don't have any restaurant tips for you today. 🍲

My summary of this hike to Altpernstein Castle in Micheldorf - Upper Austria

A clear recommendation from me to all hiking enthusiasts and especially if you like being out in nature and want to enjoy the autumn atmosphere. The cultural tour takes about 4 hours with a break and is not particularly difficult, but you will realise afterwards that you have done something for your thighs and your health. 🌲

I really enjoyed the route, and next time I will probably extend it to include the summit of the Hirschwaldstein to add a little variety to the tour. I have included our Komoot tour in the next paragraph (the Komoot tour is complete, but we skipped the Georgenberg due to time constraints)

Despite the small disappointment at the castle, I will definitely come here again - but next time with my own snack and a thermos flask of coffee. ☕

We found out about this hike on the Upper Austria Tourism website.
