Winter hike up the Buchberg between Attersee and St. Georgen - fantastic views included!

This time it went for Shaggy and me up the Buchberg - a small mountain in the Salzkammergut region directly on Lake Attersee. As we always have a large blanket of fog blocking our view of the sun, we wanted to take the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the sun after all by covering the metres in altitude. We were not disappointed, as the view of the blanket of fog below us and the surrounding mountain landscape was an absolute dream.

Attention : some sections of the forest were cordoned off - at the end of the article you will find my hiked and safe Komoot tour (as of December 2025). Please also keep to the barriers so as not to take any unnecessary risks.

Directions and parking options for the hike up the Buchberg

Getting there by car was relatively easy - we took the St. Georgen motorway exit and then drove towards Attersee am Attersee. We were able to park directly at the Atterseehalle, which was also the starting point of our tour. If there is no free parking here, you will find plenty of public (and paid) parking options along the lake.

Check out public transport right here:

The hike up the Buchberg on Lake Attersee in detail

The hike was a real highlight. It was a leisurely yet challenging outing. The start at the beginning was a bit tough, but then became more and more comfortable as time went on. Unfortunately, it was very muddy in places and there were a lot of fallen trees in the forest and also partly on the path (which probably explains the current forestry work in certain sections). Therefore, increased caution is required here and in winter it certainly doesn't hurt to pack your Grödeln for safety. Once I reached the top, I walked a short loop along the (extremely small) Buchberg trail until I arrived at a snug and the summit cross. In general, it's a really great and highly recommended hike for in-between.

Summary of the hike on the Buchberg in the Salzkammergut

I haven't been hiking for a while now, as my job and my studies have been a bit stressful recently. So this little hike was all the better to kick off the new muats drawig hiking season!
The Buchberg is absolutely recommendable. What surprised me, however: It wasn't particularly quiet at the summit, as you could actually hear the motorway all the time. But that didn't detract from the visual appeal and the view.

Muats drawig goes vegan - from 2026, our blog will only feature posts without animal suffering.

Muats drawig has had a mission since it was founded: to inspire and bring people out into beautiful Austria with all its great excursion and hiking opportunities. This mission is still the same and nothing will change. What will change, however, is the commitment to only mention businesses, excursion tips and leisure activities that are either 100 % vegan and actively avoid animal suffering, or offer vegan options (e.g. at restaurants) from 2026. In doing so, we are taking the step of providing high-quality contributions and actively doing something for animal welfare.

True to the motto: excursion tips for everyone - without any animal suffering!

Why I'm opting for a vegan leisure blog

There is really only one motive here: I don't want to be a multiplier for non-vegan choices. In future, there will still be great tips for excursions, hiking trails, sports experiences and events - just without mentioning establishments that don't offer plant-based options. For example, I will no longer mention places to stop for refreshments by name in hiking articles if they do not offer vegan options. Of course, this does not change the usual quality of the hiking contributions.

My promise: high-quality contributions for hikes

You will continue to find inspiring hikes and impressive nature experiences on muats drawig in the future. This promise also applies regardless of whether there may be grazing cattle along the way - as is unfortunately far too often the case. If a hiking trail leads through an area with mountain pastures, this will of course be mentioned clearly and transparently. The use of such paths does not automatically mean support for this form of animal husbandry - the focus is on experiencing nature.

What will change for you?

Honestly, nothing. In fact, the last posts have already developed in this direction anyway. Old contributions are gradually being adapted to ensure future quality.

What remains the same for you?

The blog remains a leisure blog - just more consciously. You can continue to look forward to great excursion tips, hiking tours and authentic experiences. The usual quality and honest reporting will of course be retained.

Questions & answers about the new way of muats drawig

- Will you explicitly mention vegan restaurants?
Yes, absolutely! The aim is to make such companies more visible.

- What about old contributions?
These will be gradually revised or completely removed - please support me and contact me if you find an old post with a non-vegan recommendation.

- How do you deal with collaborations?
Co-operations will also be a focus of muats drawig in the future in order to be able to continue to offer the blog at least to cover costs. If you are interested in a co-operation, please contact me!

- What if readers have animal-friendly tips?
Keep them coming! It's relatively easy for me to spontaneously travel to Upper Austria, get a picture of it and write a report. There is also the opportunity to post guest contributions from the community. So if you would like to write a blog post, please get in touch with me!

My personal conclusion on this step

This step is a clear statement. For me, there is no argument in favour of continuing to post leisure activities on my blog as a vegan - just for the sake of excursion tips - that may promote businesses that do not offer plant-based options or even cause animal suffering. Austria and its nature have so much to offer - that should remain the focus.

Further recommendation

Did you like this article? Then I have another great recommendation for you! Have a read here: As a vegan, you must know this restaurant: Helis Restaurant in Vöcklabruck

The Langbath lakes are one of my favourite places to visit when I fancy a leisurely and relaxing walk. The two mountain lakes offer relaxation and enjoyment of nature in any weather and at any time of year!

The circular walk around the front and rear Langbathsee lakes is ideal for all fitness and age groups. It is not for nothing that this is a very popular place, travelled to by nature lovers from all over Austria. It is therefore not uncommon for the car parks to fill up relatively quickly. It's definitely worth getting up early here!

What makes the Langbath lakes so special?

The Langbath lakes are unique every time I visit. You can't experience all weather conditions and moods - every time I come here, it's as if today is something special. Sure, you might think I'm exaggerating - after all, they're „only“ two mountain lakes - but come and see for yourself, you won't be disappointed!

What is also special is the forest trail, which is easy to walk on - it is suitable for absolutely every fitness level!

What I also find really special is that you can simply take wonderful photos here. The photos of nature are always breathtaking - the Langbathsee allows you to take fantastic photos even with unskilled photography skills. So if you're looking for a great photo spot in the middle of nature, you'll definitely get your money's worth here! Btw: did you know that the main photo of muat's drawig is also from Langbathsee? I took this fantastic photo with my drone. It's not a wintry picture, but I didn't want to withhold this fun fact from you.

Conclusion on the Langbathsee circular trail

As already mentioned several times, the Langbathsee is not only a favourite place for tourists, but also for locals. My Insta feed is also full to bursting with various Langbathsee pictures and reels - because you can also combine the Langbathsee lakes perfectly with many other tours!

PS: As this is often a point of discussion: Which direction do you always go on a circuit? For me it's only clockwise!

The hike up the Großer Schoberstein has everything you need for a beautiful tour: a great trail, a lot of metres in altitude and a fantastic view of Lake Attersee, at the end of the hike is also perfect for cooling off. For me personally, it is no longer a beginner's mountain, but very Recommended for all those who are a little more confident.

It had been a while since I last did this tour. The time had finally come and I wondered why I had waited so long for it. Great forest and gravel paths lead you up to the summit cross for around 1.5 hours. Once you reach your destination, you are rewarded with a wonderful view of Lake Attersee.

By public transport:

Whether coming from Linz/Vienna or Salzburg, the first stop takes you by train to the Kammer-Schörfling railway station. A bus takes you directly from there to the Weißenbach/Attersee hiking car park. After 26 minutes and 15 stops, you will have reached the car park. From here you have to walk back a little and then turn right onto Weißenbacher Straße. Now you still have a 500-metre walk ahead of you, and you are already at the start of the hike up the Großer Schoberstein.

Car parking facilities:

Directly in front of the entrance or along the Weißenbachtal federal road there are a few car parks at the roadside. Even though there is certainly space for 30 to 40 (my rough estimate!) cars, you shouldn't be too late. These car parks are all subject to charges. You can park here for 6 hours for €4, which is definitely enough for the Großer Schoberstein.

Route description and key data for the hike to the Großer Schoberstein

From the car park, continue along the Weißenbachtal main road for another 200 to 300 metres on asphalt until you reach the start. Now you reach a beautiful forest path. It starts relatively flat here. It stays this way for about half a kilometre until the ascent begins. The serpentines take you further and further uphill on forest and gravel paths. You have the opportunity to take a break here again and again. Many benches invite you to do so with their fantastic views. The trail continues upwards for around three kilometres towards the summit cross.

Now it's time for the final spurt. The last 500 metres are waiting for you. The route continues along narrow gravel paths. You should take extra care with dogs and children from here onwards. Now you have a small „climbing passage“ ahead of you, where you have to climb over crampons and a somewhat steeper rock with the support of a wire rope. But don't panic, this section is very short and quickly overcome. Now you just have to climb a few more rocks and you've reached your destination. Once you reach the summit cross, it's time to recharge your batteries and enjoy the wonderful view of Lake Attersee. For the way back, simply take exactly the same route again - so at least you know what you're in for.

What else awaits you on the hike to the Großer Schoberstein

In summer

For me, a huge plus point of a hiking tour is always the opportunity to cool down and refresh afterwards. After the tour, you are right by the Attersee, where you can find a nice spot and relax at the end of the day.

More than just a summit - little insider tips

Are you not so keen on the hike to the Großer Schoberstein after all, or do you think something is missing here? No problem, you have more options if you tackle this route.

The small Schoberstein: In my opinion, it is rather unknown and often not very popular. The route contains small climbing passages and you should find out beforehand whether it will be too difficult or dangerous. Shortly before you reach the rocks on the Großer Schoberstein, you can turn slightly left and continue on the Kleiner Schoberstein.

Mahdlgupf - Dachsteinblick - Brennerin: If you want a slightly longer tour, you have a free choice here. You can either hike „only“ as far as the Mahdlgupf or go one stage further to the Dachsteinblick. If that's still not enough for you, the Brennerin is of course also available. But be sure to find out in advance how long this tour is, what the trail conditions are like and whether there is anything else you need to be aware of.

My summary of the hike up the Großer Schoberstein

There's only one question I have to ask myself: why did I wait so long to do this tour again? I can't explain it to myself. I can't explain it to myself. It was just unbelievably great - and not just for me! Emma also really enjoyed the hike up the Großer Schoberstein. It's exactly these paths that she really enjoys, and the length was perfect for a twelve-year-old Jack Russell terrier dog. Although there were places where I had to pick her up, she managed 90 % of the route herself.

The tour has one small drawback for me: there are almost no signposts. Although they are hardly needed at all, I was a little confused until about the first hairpin bend, where the ascent begins. But to be honest, I can cope with that. The wonderful forest and gravel paths with a great view of Lake Attersee, the beautiful rocky passages just before the summit cross and the unbelievably beautiful view once you reach the top are simply fantastic. For me, too, the length of the route and the metres of elevation gain are just perfect. A small plus point is, of course, that you can cool off in the Attersee after such a strenuous hike. I certainly won't wait that long to do this tour again. But maybe next time I'll continue on to the Mahdlgupf - we'll see.

Of course, we mustn't forget beautiful Salzburg, with all its great places and excursion destinations. That's why we were out and about for you in Weitwörth - Nußdorf and were enchanted by the Weitwörther Au circular trail

A really nice and cosy outing for the family. A short walk outside in nature to enjoy the peace and quiet. That's exactly what awaits you on this wonderful excursion tip. I walked a great circular route of just under 5 kilometres around the Weitwörther Ausee lake. But the Weitwörther Au circular trail offers so much more - many different and extensive paths, along the Salzach and all the way to Oberndorf.

Directions and parking facilities

By public transport:

You can reach your destination in 1 hour and 20 minutes by public transport. The first port of call here is always Salzburg Central Station, which you can of course also easily reach by ÖBB or Westbahn train. Here you board the Salzburger Lokalbahn S1 - Lamprechtshausen Bahnhof. After 22 minutes and 11 stops, you have already reached your destination. You are now at the starting point of our tour, Weitwörth - Nußdorf station.

By car:

But travelling by car is no witchcraft either. As is so often the case, you first take the A1 motorway in the direction of Salzburg. Follow this motorway until you reach the „Salzburg Nord“ exit. Keep left at the fork and follow the signs for Braunau and the Salzburg N/B156 junction. Continue on this road for about 2 kilometres until you reach a roundabout, where you take the third exit. After a short distance, turn right again towards Braunau/ Oberndorf/ Anthering. Now continue straight ahead for 11 kilometres on Lamprechtshausener Straße - there is a roundabout on this route, take the first exit here. After this stretch, take the exit towards Michaelbeuern/ Nußdorf a. Haunsberg and then turn left onto the Nußdorfer Landesstraße. Now just leave the roundabout at the second exit and you have reached your destination.

Car parking facilities:

I searched and researched for a really long time, but it looks like the official car park for the Weitwörth Au is the P+R car park at Weitwörth - Nußdorf station. You can park your car here free of charge. There is space for about 50 cars, which should easily be enough to find a spot for your car. For me, this is perfectly fine as there are really quite a few parking options here and it doesn't look like there will be any problems with space. Nevertheless, I don't want to give any false information. If this is not official parking for the Weitwörth Au, please let me know and contact us so that we can put this right.

Directions and key data for the Weitwörther Au circular trail

For once, there's not too much to tell here. The route I chose was actually the Auenerlebnisweg. The circular route around the Ausee is suitable for Visitors with restricted mobility (wheelchair, walking frame, ...) wonderfully suitable. Most of this barrier-free circuit consists of a great, firm gravel path. This is perfect for being mobile with a pushchair and getting from A to B without any problems.

Of course, a short detour to the Salzach was also a must. It flows along the border between Austria and Germany, just a 10-minute walk away. We walked along it for a short distance, following a forest path for a few hundred metres. Up to the Salzach platform at a viewpoint. A beautiful, stony sandbank invites you to take a short break here. This spot is simply marvellous. Enjoy the moment, but don't forget the time, we're only halfway there. On the way back, there are a few more places to rest with a fantastic view of the Weitwörther Ausee.

Refreshment stops and what else awaits you

Vogelhide on the Weitwörther Au circular trail

On a small peninsula in the Aussee lake, a bird hide - a sheltered, roofed shelter - allows the undisturbed observation of the bird world. Over 70 bird species breed in the Salzach floodplains, as well as migratory birds that rest in the lake. In addition to various species of ducks, greylag geese, cormorants, goosanders and great crested grebes on or in the water, various species of woodpecker can also be spotted in the surrounding trees from the hide.

Refreshment stops

The Weitwörther Au circular trail doesn't just have to be my 5 kilometre route. You can walk around endlessly and conjure up a huge tour. But what I definitely want to do on one of my next visits is the walk to Oberndorf near Salzburg or Laufen. It's a 50-minute walk along the Salzach to Oberndorf. The perfect route in summer. The Weitwörther Au has no refreshment stops, but it doesn't need them. The beautiful, approximately 4-kilometre-long trail takes you to more than just one restaurant. Yes, and what could be better than a short trip for a coffee or a delicious ice cream?.

The Silent Night Chapel

Of course, I also have a little attraction for you. As we all know, the best is saved for last. I didn't know this sight and the story behind it before, but I find it really interesting. The chapel is located in Oberndorf near Salzburg and is dedicated to the poet and composer of our beloved Christmas carol „Silent Night, Holy Night“. The song was performed here for the first time on 24 December 1818. If you are interested in such stories or buildings, I can only recommend that you pay a visit to the „Silent Night Chapel“.

My conclusion on the Weitwörther Au circular trail

For the most part, I am only travelling in Upper Austria and we have wonderful places and excursion destinations here. But after the Weitwörther Au circular route, I have to admit that Salzburg is in no way inferior. I find it an incredibly beautiful and cosy route. The peace and quiet that you rarely get to enjoy anywhere else. The trail, which has been designed with so much love, is simply fantastic.

There are also so many options here and you can really let off steam. Take the „Auenerlebnisweg“ or continue to the Salzach and extend the tour a little. If that's still not enough, simply take a walk to Oberndorf or Laufen. Here you can be enchanted by the pubs and fortify yourself with coffee or a delicious ice cream. You can explore the beautiful village of Laufen or visit the „Silent Night Chapel“. At this point, I can only tell you one thing - it was my first visit to Weitwörth, but definitely not my last.

2023 was an exciting year for us. We travelled a lot. Whether hiking, eating or at various events. For 2024, we would like to introduce you to a few „places in the Salzkammergut that you must know“.

Do you want the new year to be something very special for you? Then you've come to the right place. We'll give you tips and inspiration for great excursions and activities. Let's start 2024 with a small list that includes a few of our countless adventures. Places in the Salzkammergut that you need to know - that's today's topic.

Simply click on the respective headings to find out more about the individual location.

Hike to the Eisenaueralm via the Burggrabenklamm gorge

Places in the Salzkammergut that you must know and what should not be missing? - That's right, the Eisenaueralm. In the warmer months, the hike is simply fantastic and it's not on my to-do list every year for nothing. You start with a beautiful forest path that leads you to the start. You make your way up bit by bit over high rocks and steps. The first kilometre is the most strenuous for me, although it's not even that steep, but personally I just prefer normal forest paths. I'm always happy when this first part is done. After that, there is a lovely narrow path along the gorge.

Those with a fear of heights should perhaps think twice about this route to the Eisenaueralm. Although there are mostly wire ropes to hold on to, you should be sure-footed. The trail continues over a small bridge, which offers you a wonderful view of the gorge and a waterfall visible in the distance. Be sure to stop here briefly and enjoy. A small forest path follows, which takes you the last stretch to the forest road, from where you then follow the alpine pasture to the huts. From here it gets cosy and believe me, you will be fascinated by the view up there. So enjoy this part of the hike to the Eisenaueralm and take your time.

Hike up the Ameisstein and around the Almsee lake

No matter what time of year, whether in the cold months, when the whole panorama is transformed into a winter wonderland, or in summer with the perfect opportunity to cool off. For a family outing on a Sunday, a varied walk with the dog or simply for a tour with friends. A nice long loop, enough metres in altitude with a view of the lake afterwards and the way back along the shore to relax and enjoy. Everything I personally need for a perfect tour. So pack a coffee and a snack or don't forget the necessary change to stop for a bite to eat and it will be an unforgettable excursion.

Hike up the Eibenberg - view of the Offensee and Traunsee lakes in the Salzkammergut region

The great hike up the Eibenberg is perfect for autumn - starting from the Offensee side and with a fantastic view of the Salzkammergut, the mountains and the surrounding lakes. Our hike up the Eibenberg was a real adventure. It took us a total of six hours to reach the summit and return - including a break. The Offensee is the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to refresh themselves before heading home.

Grünberg & Laudachsee hiking trail Salzkammergut - Gmunden

Great Grünberg hike from Gasthaus Silberfuchs / Franzl im Holz to Laudachsee and then to Grünbergalm and back again. The hike to and on the Grünberg is definitely worth a visit! The inconspicuous mountain in Gmunden and the beautiful Laudachsee is a real insider tip when it comes to short hikes, half-day excursions, day trips and even multi-day excursions are possible thanks to the overnight accommodation options.

Depending on your mood, you can extend or shorten the route and make the most of your day. The small mountain in Gmunden in the Salzkammergut is the perfect opportunity for adventurous and hiking enthusiasts and is therefore always worth a visit. There are so many ways to experience the Grünberg that you will never get bored. Once at the top, you can enjoy a fantastic View of the Traunsee enjoy.

The hike to the front and rear Signalkogel - circular route via the Langbath lakes. A great tour with beautiful views and a circular hike on top. The hike to the front and rear Signalkogel actually offers you everything you need for a perfect day. Strenuous sections for the body - leisurely sections to clear your head - fantastic views to enjoy. Suitable for a lovely Sunday outing with the children and also for dogs. You can do this tour all year round on forest paths and forest roads.

Hike up the Hongar

For me, the Hongar is one of the mountains that I tackle most often during the year and is therefore definitely one of the places in the Salzkammergut that you need to know. On the one hand for hiking, on the other hand it is a great training mountain for the cycling season. You can climb it on foot all year round, whether in hot temperatures or in the winter months when there is snow. It's a slightly shorter hike, not far from me. Perfect for a little sporting activity, even if your diary is a little busier.

Hike to the Hochsteinalm - circular route from Almgasthof Windlegern

No plans for the weekend yet? A family outing, a new adventure with the dog or just fancy a solo hike away from the stress and noise of everyday life - then the hike to the Hochsteinalm is just the thing for you. As a child, it was always a highlight for me, of course I wasn't a huge fan of hiking back then, but once I got to the top it was a real paradise. There were so many animals to marvel at, a little something in the Almgasthof Hochsteinalm and there was food for the animals on the way back, which I really enjoyed. Today I love the path via Windlegern to clear my head and give my dog a physical and mental workout. It's a slightly longer tour to get to the Hochsteinalm, but I experience the same feelings of happiness as I did as a child.

Hike up the Großer Sonnstein - a fantastic view of Lake Traunsee

A must for every year. A mountain tour with highs and lows. It is a really great and varied trail. Through the beautiful village of Ebensee and a great forest path that takes you over hill and dale. Really steep passages, steps - which push your legs to the limit and a great rocky path just before the summit cross. But once you reach the top, all the effort is forgotten. This view of Lake Traunsee is so incredibly beautiful. It's easy to forget the time while enjoying a coffee. But you should also take your time here and really enjoy the whole thing. So if you fancy a shorter hike, but one that still packs a punch, I highly recommend this route.

Kaltenbach wilderness - Miesweg circular hiking trail

Whether you want to combine the two routes or complete them individually, it's definitely worth seeing. The forest paths and the great feeling along the gorge on the Kaltenbachwildnis trail or the wooden bridges along the Traunsee lake on the Miesweg trail. Both are so indescribably beautiful. As there are not really many metres in altitude to climb and the tour is rather leisurely, you can really enjoy it.

I have rarely seen such beautiful, varied trails when you combine these hikes. As I also have a dog myself and this excursion is perfect for spending the day with your pet, I think the Kaltenbachwildnis - Miesweg circular hiking trail is even better than it already is. What I also find great about this tour is that you can decide spontaneously whether to do just one of the two trails or combine them. The only negative thing I have to mention is the parking facilities. It's often really difficult to find a place to park your car here. Otherwise, I can only recommend the hike, so now you know your next destination - what are you waiting for?

Hiking around the Gosau lakes - a family excursion in a class of its own

As you can easily see, this is simply a highlight of the Salzkammergut. There are many ways to enjoy this special place and let it work its magic on you.

Starting from the car park, we made our way clockwise along the front of Lake Gosau. At the end of the lake, you have the option of turning right and heading back to the car park or going straight on to the rear Lake Gosau. If, like us, you decide to go straight ahead, you can expect about 350 metres in altitude and then a wonderful lake in a gigantic landscape setting. At the end of the lake you will also find a refreshment stop with a drinking fountain.

Along the way, there are many great photo opportunities or simply moments to savour. You will also find the so-called Gosaulacke between the front and rear lakes, which is definitely worth a short detour. The way back from the rear to the front Lake Gosau is the same. Once you arrive at the front lake, you can now continue the circular hiking trail and walk clockwise back to the start.

Hike from the Gahberg to the Hongar

I think it's a great day out. Whether with the family, as it's not too strenuous even for children, a varied walk with the dog or just for a nice solo trip. The Almgasthof Schwarz is a great place to stop for refreshments, which provides drinks and usually also good pastries on a self-service basis, even on rest days. You still have to climb a little over 400 metres in altitude, but apart from a somewhat steeper but short section, you don't really feel the difference over the distance.

In summer, you can make yourself comfortable afterwards and enjoy the starry sky on the Gahberg or take a refreshing dip in Lake Attersee before heading home. I can only recommend this wonderful hike and the best thing about it is that you can tackle it at any time of year.
So put it on your 2024 to-do list and share your experiences with us Sent from my iPhone

For me, the hike from the Gahberg to the Hongar is a wonderful alternative for an activity where you want to do something for your body but don't fancy steep passages and thousands of metres in altitude.

I was out and about again, the last tour of the old year - as I did relatively little in terms of physical exercise in 2023, I wanted to change that at the end of the year and be out and about more again in 2024. The key phrase for me is „start slowly and don't overdo it straight away“. So my first goal was an easy hike from the Gahberg to the Hongar.

Directions and parking facilities

For me, the easiest and quickest way is via the motorway. Either take the A1 motorway towards Salzburg as far as the Schörfling exit, then turn left and follow the road to Attersee. You then take this road to Weyregg. However, if you are travelling on the motorway towards Vienna/Linz, stay on the A1 until the Seewalchen exit. Turn right and then left at the traffic lights - you are now on the road that takes you to Weyregg. Follow this road for about 5.5 kilometres and immediately after the Spar in Weyregg, in a bend to the right, a road to the left leads to the Gahberg (observatory). This entrance is signposted, follow this road for about another 5.5 kilometres.

Parking facilities

Up the hill, past the observatory and opposite the chapel is a small car park for about 8 - 10 cars and your starting point. If this car park is full, there is also a gravelled area just before the observatory where you can try your luck - but I have never had any problems with my car not being able to park due to overcrowding.

Route description and key data for the hike from the Gahberg to the Hongar

You start directly at the chapel on the Gahberg. The first half kilometre takes you further along the tarmac road, but don't panic, it will be a beautiful path that leads you to the Hongar. You then turn left onto a forest road, walk past a barrier and from here is the actual starting point. Turn right into the forest. This is the first of a few uphill sections. A beautiful forest path leads you uphill over hill and dale. But not for too long, you will soon have made it and from this point onwards the beautiful, leisurely part begins.

From here you have a great view of the Brunnkogel and the Hochlecken, and you can even see the summit cross and the Hochleckenhaus with the naked eye. Again and again you come to small passages that lead you uphill and downhill. When you pass the Kreuzing Alm, you have already covered 2 kilometres, and you follow the gravel path for another 1 km. Then you come to the „steepest“ and most strenuous section of this tour. Over 1.5 kilometres, you have to cover 150 metres in altitude. But you even get a little extra for it: you don't just hike to the Hongar, no, you even pass another mountain. The Alpenberg, the highest point of this tour, lies at 976 metres and exactly between the Gahberg and the Hongar.

You have already covered 5 kilometres. It's not far to the Almgasthof Schwarz. A great forest path leads you from here over the last few metres to the Hongar. Now you have earned a break. A coffee and something to satisfy your hunger is just the thing. Enjoy it and recharge your batteries, because don't forget, you're only halfway there. Well fortified, you then return the same way. For me, the only negative point of the hike from the Gahberg to the Hongar is that the outward and return routes are identical.

Refreshments and what else awaits you

The Hongar offers one of the best places to stop for refreshments that I personally know: the Almgasthof Schwarz. Friendly staff, delicious food and plenty of space. But the best thing is that even when they are closed or closed due to bad weather, a room with drinks and usually also pastries is made available. You can always get something there, self-service and there is a cash desk to pay - that's what I call service.

Opening hours (as of January 2024)

Thursday and Friday from 09:00 - 21:00

Saturday & Sunday from 09:00 - 18:00

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday day off

In summer

For me, the opportunity to cool down and refresh myself afterwards is always a huge plus point on a hiking tour. The hike from the Gahberg to the Hongar is perfect for this. After the tour, you are right by the Attersee, where you can find a nice spot and round off the day in style.

For me as a photographer

The Gahberg doesn't just offer a great view during the day. It is also beautiful up there at night and very dark - which makes it perfect for star photography. I have often been there to photograph the stars at new moon. Here you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye under a cloudless sky. There is a good reason why there is an observatory on the Gahberg.

My summary of the hike from the Gahberg to the Hongar

Directions and parking options for the hike

If you've already read a few of my posts, you'll know that I'm an absolute fan of public transport and use it wherever possible - especially as we have the climate ticket, which has already paid off several times for our trips. As the train connection from us to Micheldorf would take over 2 hours and therefore three times longer than by car, we decided to travel by car. We took the motorway towards Graz and left at Inzersdorf. At the roundabout in the direction of Kirchdorf, Micheldorf is just a few minutes away.

Route description - Cultural trail K92 in Micheldorf - Hike to Altpernstein Castle

Refreshment stops on the hike to Altpernstein Castle

My summary of this hike to Altpernstein Castle in Micheldorf - Upper Austria

I really enjoyed the route, and next time I will probably extend it to include the summit of the Hirschwaldstein to add a little variety to the tour. I have included our Komoot tour in the next paragraph (the Komoot tour is complete, but we skipped the Georgenberg due to time constraints)

The hike was an absolute dream. Yes, it was exhausting. Yes, I underestimated it. Yes, I was super happy when we reached the summit and were able to enjoy our summit potluck (potluck = everyone brings something to eat and you share it like a buffet ... at least that's how it was explained to me).

Directions and parking options in the direction of Offensee in the Salzkammergut

If your journey to the Eibenberg starts in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, and you are travelling by car, follow the signs to the A1 motorway in the direction of Salzburg.

Take the A1 motorway in the direction of Salzburg until you reach the „Regau“ exit. Leave the motorway at this exit and follow the signs to Gmunden. After you have passed Gmunden, continue your journey on the B144, which takes you through the beautiful landscape of the Salzkammergut. Always follow the signs to Offensee, which is just a few kilometres away from the Eibenberg entrance.

Route description - Hike up the Eibenberg from the Offensee side

The path is signposted and really hard to miss. In the first quarter you reach a forest road - simply cross it and continue the hike in the forest.

The view is an absolute dream - with a bit of luck you might even spot a chamois foraging on the steep slopes in the distance.

Refreshment stops on the hike up the Eibenberg

My conclusion on this hike up the Eibenberg

My absolute highlight 2023, I had to wait half a year for this moment. On 19 August, the time had finally come - the photography trip to the Three Peaks began.

Everything was perfect. We were lucky to get a room just for the three of us, it was the day around the new moon and the setting couldn't have been better. But what exactly were the stars ideal for? Our plan was to photograph the Milky Way above the Three Peaks and the only thing that could go wrong was the weather. I'll tell you in this blog post whether all the factors played a part in our photography trip to the Three Peaks and what it was like.

Arrival and parking facilities

Our journey started at around 4.30 am. We had an almost five-hour drive ahead of us and only had to use the motorway for a short stretch. It was definitely an exhausting journey for Eli, who had agreed to be the driver. Starting as soon as possible was still the best decision to get a good parking space.

You will definitely have plenty of parking options here. How far away you want to park your car and whether you want to carry your heavy rucksack before the hike begins is another question. There would also be the option of taking a shuttle bus. Of course, we only realised the day before that we were a little too late for this option, as all the buses were already fully booked. So our plan was to start as soon as possible and park as far forward as possible.

My two tips for the photography excursion to the Three Peaks. Firstly, check the shuttle service early enough and think about where you want to park and whether you need a bus. And secondly, we used the mobile phone app „Easy Park“ to park and pay. It worked really well, just enter the number of the car park, from when to when you're parking and you're ready to go. If you return earlier than expected, no problem - you only pay for as long as you really need.

Daily programme and route description for the photography excursion to the Three Peaks

As all three of us had a 10-kilo rucksack with us thanks to the camera equipment, we took the bus from the car park to just before the Auronzo hut. A bus ticket to the top costs €10 per person. Start of the hike - top car park. Here you start with a small climb up to the Auronzo hut and hike for a good two kilometres along the Three Peaks on a gravel path. At the halfway point, you walk past the Capella degli Alpini, a small chapel. The first two kilometres are done and with a heavy pack, you have already earned a short rest at the Lavaredo hut.

The steepest part of this tour is now ahead of you. Without the weight on my shoulders, I would say that it's actually only half as tough. But all the equipment made it a bit difficult for me. But after the view that awaits you at the top, right next to the Three Peaks, I can promise you that it was all worth it. Once you have completed this passage, it's half time. From here you can already see the hut we had to get to. A bit downhill, another 2 kilometres or so on a gravel path and the final ascent. You've made it, you've reached the hut and the view of the Three Peaks from the terrace is indescribable.

Camera equipment and other equipment

Let's talk briefly about what I took with me and why my rucksack was so heavy. First of all, my priority was clearly photography and I took more with me than I needed for my final photo. I wanted to try something called an interval shot to capture the course of the Milky Way. For this reason, I took my old camera with me along with a small travelling tripod. Briefly listed here.

Refreshment stops and our accommodation - the Drei Zinnen Hütte

Let's start with our accommodation. We were lucky and were able to book a triple room for Eli, Jasmin and me about half a year ago at the Three Peaks Hut get hold of. You should make a reservation as soon as possible. Not only your own room, but also the dormitory is booked out very quickly. The Drei Zinnen Hütte has 30 beds in smaller rooms, there are only 4 twin rooms, the remaining sleeping places are mattress dormitories in shared dormitories with 8 - 24 beds, mostly bunk beds.

It was a really pleasant stay for me. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the rooms were very clean. The food was just as I always imagine it to be in a mountain hut - simply unbelievably delicious. Not just for the meat lovers among us, no, there was also a great selection for the veggies. Very important: only cash payment possible.

Opening hours

open from 24.06. - 24.09.2023 from approx. 07:00 - 22:00 and invites you to enjoy cold drinks and hot food.

My conclusion on the photography excursion to the Three Peaks

Let's start with the only negative thing, which for me personally isn't too bad in this case. As you can take the buses to the Auronzo hut, you'll be walking the 2-3 kilometres with crowds of people. I saw the whole thing as a photography excursion with the main focus on the Milky Way and so, for once, I was one of those typical tourists. But apart from that, it was simply marvellous.

The route was mostly easy, with only two steeper sections to complete. The Drei Zinnen Hütte was great, which is exactly how I imagine a stay in the mountains. Very friendly staff, great food, clean rooms and a fantastic view on top. Now to the photography - was it worth it? Absolutely for me. Of course I'm not a professional photographer and many people would tell me what I could improve on the photo, but for me it turned out exactly as I had imagined.
