A great trip to the Nixenfall for a weekend in the sunshine. Whether with the kids, your cute four-legged friend, a couple's outing or simply for a solo trip to clear your mind.

Even as a child, I loved the trip to the Nixenfall. You don't have to walk too long, no metres in altitude and a fantastic destination - everything a perfect day needs. A beautiful forest path leads you to the „entrance“ of the Nixenfall. You then walk along a stream and over steps and bridges to the waterfall, where a mermaid invites you to rest and enjoy.

Directions and parking facilities

by car

No matter which direction you are coming from, the first route will take you onto the A1 motorway. Coming from Salzburg, take the Mondsee exit. Then drive along the lake to Unterach - here you can round off your tour with a great breakfast in „The tube“ begin. Now turn right and cycle along the Attersee to „Weißenbach am Attersee“. Shortly after the Europacamp, turn right. Follow this road for just under a kilometre until you turn right one last time, cross a bridge and reach your destination.

However, if you are travelling from Linz, just take the Schörfling exit. Turn left and follow the road to Attersee. Turn left again here and continue along the lake for about 17 kilometres until you reach Weißenbach. Shortly before the Europacamp, turn left again. One kilometre later, turn right over a bridge where your destination is located.

by public transport

The first stop you need to aim for is Vöcklabruck railway station. From here, get on a train that will take you to Kammer - Schörfling in around 15 minutes and 5 stops. Then continue by bus (562). 15 stops and less than half an hour later you will find yourself in Weißenbach/ Attersse at the hikers' car park. From here, you still have around 1.2 kilometres to go until you reach the Nixenfall car park, where your journey begins. The whole journey by public transport from Vöcklabrucl railway station takes around 1 hour - which is perfectly fine in my opinion.

Parking facilities

You can park in the Nixenfall car park. This car park is subject to a charge of €3 for 6 hours - there's really no need to complain. Around 30 cars can be parked here, which is usually more than enough. However, if it should happen that you can't find a free parking space, you only have to drive about 200 metres back over the bridge. The Weißenbach car park also offers plenty of parking spaces. But be careful, this car park is also subject to charges.

Directions from the excursion to the Nixenfall

As already mentioned, you start at the Nixenfall car park. This leads you not quite 1.5 kilometres to the „entrance“ to the Nixenfall. A large, let's call it a wooden arch, with the inscription „Nixenfall“ signposts your further direction. From here, you follow a somewhat narrower path for about 1 kilometre to the mermaid. Walking along this path, I always have the feeling that I'm walking through a gorge. But don't panic, there is no danger of falling here. You could „fall“ a maximum of 1.5 metres in a few places.
Shortly before you reach your destination, you have to climb a few beautiful wooden steps. Once you have done this, you will not only be greeted by the lovingly designed mermaid, you will also be rewarded with a fantastic view of the waterfall. Now it's time to take a deep breath and recharge your batteries. I hope you haven't forgotten your refreshments and are enjoying the moment with a cup of coffee and a tasty treat.

But the way back still has some beautiful corners in store for you. You could walk the same way back to the car park, but that would be a bit boring. About halfway along the route, you can turn off towards the Weißenbach stream. Here you will find beautiful sunbathing spots, a great view of the mountains and crystal-clear water - perfect for cooling off in summer. Here you can walk along the water or follow the path a little higher up. Whichever you choose, both paths will lead you back to the car park. For me, the trip to the Nixenfall deserves 2 big extra points. A great way to cool off and a beautiful circular route - just what I need for a perfect day.

My summary of the trip to the Nixenfall

It's always a little highlight for me. It doesn't always have to be a huge mountain where you spend hours travelling. These little adventures are also incredibly beautiful and have their very own charm. The trip to Nixenfall is the perfect example of this. You pack a small snack, grab the dog (in my case) and off you go. It's also a great destination for families with children.

I remember what it was like for me as a child. I wasn't the biggest hiking fan, but I loved the Nixenfall even back then. I find it just as fascinating today as I did 20 years ago. A great trail and a beautiful destination - the perfect walk for me and Emma (my dog). I can only recommend this tour to anyone. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of visiting the Nixenfall, then put it on your to-do list and let yourself be enchanted by the charm of this walk.
