Together with two colleagues and Shaggy, we headed up to the Kulmspitze. Our destination was the Kulmspitz observation tower right at the top of the mountain. We started in Oberwang and instead of going directly to the Kulmspitze (approx. 3.5 km), we decided to take a slightly longer circular route. You can find our tour below as a Komoot route.

Directions and parking options for the hike to the Kulmspitze in Oberwang

The journey was very easy via the A1 motorway exit Oberwang, from where the hike also starts. We parked directly at the starting point of the Komoot tour attached below. Tip: You can use the app to navigate directly to the starting point on your mobile phone.

Travelling by public transport to Oberwang is also possible (bus).

The hike to the Kulmspitze in the Salzkammergut

The hike is a real highlight with plenty of opportunities to organise the tour. Our tour starts on a (not so nice) forest road, which quickly turns into a natural and signposted forest path. From then on, the route leads uphill through the beautiful forest and you can enjoy the hike all the way. The stopover further up is a Radstatt chapel, from where you continue towards Kulmspitze.

You have to walk the last kilometre along the road back to the car. There is hardly any traffic on this road - only one car came towards us.

There are no refreshment stops on this hike. It's best to simply bring your own good snack and a nice coffee in a thermos flask – then you're definitely on the safe side.

Summary of the hike to the Kulmspitze with a view of Lake Mondsee

Even if the start and end of the hike through the (forest) roads are not really beautiful, the hike still gets my absolute recommendation. The path through the forest, the views, the beautiful, modern wooden tower and the cosy seating at the summit clearly speak for themselves. You can vary the tour as you wish and it should also be possible to cycle via Mondsee and the forest road.

So make sure you save it and make a note of it!

The hike to the Almkogel, located between Mondsee and St. Gilgen in the beautiful Salzkammergut region, is an ideal tour for in-between. It is particularly charming in the evening, when the sun slowly sinks behind the mountains and transforms the sky into a colourful spectacle. The fantastic view of the surrounding lakes and mountains from the summit makes this hike an unforgettable experience.

Directions and parking options for the hike to the Almkogel

The journey to the Almkogel is uncomplicated and easy to reach. If you are coming from Salzburg, take the Mondsee motorway exit. Coming from Linz, take the Oberwang exit. Then drive towards St. Gilgen until you pass Lake Krottensee. You can then park conveniently right next to the Krottensee, where there is a gravel car park, which is also the starting point for the hike. Travelling by public transport was out of the question for me this time, as I was out and about with my dog Shaggy.

The hike up the Almkogel: an evening adventure in the Salzkammergut

We started our hike at around 7.00 pm and set off at a good pace. The start was right at the car park at Krottensee, with a steep climb waiting for us right at the beginning. The first 500 metres were a real challenge with 100 metres of elevation gain. The trail initially led along a forest path before turning into a forest road in places. Along the way, there were always fantastic views of Lake Mondsee, which almost made us forget the effort.

The ascent to the Almkogel is signposted as taking around 2 hours, but as it was already relatively late and we didn't want to hike through the unfamiliar forest in the dark, we set a faster pace. In total, the entire tour, including ascent and descent, took us 2 hours (without a break), or 2.5 hours with the photo breaks at the summit.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find out whether any of the nearby places to stop for a bite to eat also offer plant-based dishes. That's why I won't make a specific recommendation here. It's best to simply bring a good snack and a nice coffee in a thermos flask - then you're definitely on the safe side.

Conclusion on the hike to the Almkogel

The hike to the Almkogel was a real highlight. Shaggy had great fun and I was able to fully enjoy the breathtaking view. At the end of the day, you feel really good and proud to have mastered a challenging tour. The hike is suitable for the whole family, but you need to be careful and have a certain level of fitness.

Bis jetzt kannte ich nur den Weg über die Burggrabenklamm. Es gibt aber einige Möglichkeiten und eine davon war die Wanderung vom Mondsee auf die Eisenaueralm. Ich hatte es schon seit Längerem geplant eine andere Route zu versuchen, aber irgendwie hat es mich dann im Frühjahr wieder auf meinen alt bekannten Weg geschlagen. Das wollte ich dieses Jahr aber nicht auf mir sitzen lassen, also musste ein zweiter Versuch her um endlich mal vom Mondsee zu starten.

Directions and parking facilities

Car

Take the A1 motorway in the direction of Salzburg as far as Oberwang, where you take the exit. Now drive to the Loibichl bathing area car park and turn left. Follow the Attersee road along the lake for about 6 kilometres and then turn right towards Oberburgau. Here it is another 2.5 km until you reach your destination.

I would also have liked to have looked for a way for you to get there easily by public transport, but unfortunately I couldn't really find one. If you know a connection to get to the starting point by train or bus, please let me know and get in touch.

Car parks

There are a few parking spaces available from 08:00 - 20:00 about 10 minutes before the starting point at the outdoor pool area in the municipality of Sankt Gilgen. Directly at the start there is also a small strip next to the road where some cars have parked. However, these car parks are not official and, as far as I know, stopping and parking is prohibited here.

Route description - Hike from Mondsee to Eisenaueralm - Details

The hike starts steeply here, on a gravel path. After a short time on the stony ground, the route becomes a narrow forest path that runs right up to the top. After about 15 minutes, you have the opportunity to visit the Kreuzstein waterfall. Just a short diversion, a small diversions and you are already standing in front of this magnificent spectacle. As I usually prefer to reach my main destination first, we only visited the waterfall on the way back. But whichever way is better for you, I can only recommend this 2/3 minute diversions.

Between the reasonably steep sections, the trail descends through small streams and over two iron steps - you should be particularly careful here. Once you've managed that, two really great viewpoints await you. A bench invites you to take a break and gives you a marvellous view of Lake Mondsee. Just follow the signposted forest path for a short while and then it's time for the final spurt. The last section leads you along a forest road directly to the Eisenaueralm. A fantastic view of the Schafberg and the beautiful huts.

The Kienberghütte

Opens in May the Kienberghütte opens its doors for you again and is available for refreshments every day from 09:00 until October. Except Thursday - this is a well-deserved day off.

The Buchberghütte

Even with the Buchberghütte the season starts again in May.

Bathing possibility

Right at the start, there is access to a public area and the opportunity to swim a lap in Lake Mondsee. What could be better than cooling off after a strenuous tour, drenched in sweat?.

My summary of the hike from Mondsee to the Eisenaueralm

For the first time, I wasn't drawn to the Burggrabenklamm gorge. But how did I like this route, can it keep up with my old familiar tour? - In any case, I was thrilled. For me, beautiful forest paths are always the best when hiking. I also loved the rest stops, and of course I took a few minutes to enjoy the view. But my absolute highlight was the Kreuzstein waterfall. Just a short „diversions“ and you realise once again how beautiful it is here.

There aren't as many kilometres to cover and you reach your destination faster. But it seemed steeper to me. But that could also be because I haven't done much this year. As always, the refreshment stops were great. I'm simply a big fan of the Eisenau. Every year I'm often drawn to the top. Whether from Mondsee, via the Burggrabenklamm gorge or by bike along the forest road. I can definitely recommend all the tours, but I was really surprised by the hike from Mondsee to the Eisenaueralm.
