An event of superlatives - Vienna Comic Con 2024 took place in Halls A and B of Messe Wien and in the Congress Centre. On over 42,000 square metres, the event offered an extensive programme for comic, film, gaming and cosplay fans. The mix of international star guests, creative artists, exciting panels, exclusive merchandise offers and impressive cosplays made the event a highlight of the year.

 Directions and parking facilities

By public transport

You can get to the Vienna Comic Con 2023 easily and carefree, without any stress or effort, by public transport. In my opinion, the best option is to take a Westbahn train to Vienna Westbahnhof. Now, of course, you have a few options for getting to the Vienna Exhibition Centre. We took the U3 in the direction of Simmering, making 4 stops on the way to Herrengasse. Here we then walked about 10 minutes to the U2, to Schottentor - as an alternative you can also take the U3 one stop further to Stephansplatz, change to the U1 and travel to Praterstern (3 stops). The last journey for both options is on the U2 to Messe - Prater. You will be standing right in front of the exhibition centre and have reached your destination.

By car

The quickest way is clearly via the motorway. Take the A1 motorway and later the A21 towards Vienna. Then keep left and take the A23 motorway to the Handelskai exit. Now you only have a 5 - 10 minute journey ahead of you and you will have reached your destination by car. 

You can park directly on site, Messe Wien provides several multi-storey car parks. Car parks A & D and the CC underground car park together offer space for around 4000 vehicles. The parking fee for all three is €4.20 per hour or part thereof. My information is that as a trade fair visitor you have to pay a daily flat rate of € 8.00 - this can be redeemed at the trade fair cash desks. However, you would have to read in advance exactly how this works.

Tickets could be purchased directly and easily from OETICKET. A Saturday ticket at the normal price in advance cost EUR 42 and you could be there from 10:00 to 19:00. A Sunday ticket was available for just EUR 38, with shorter opening hours from 10:00 to 17:00. The weekend ticket was 72,- EUR and a VIP ticket could be purchased for 300,- EUR or the Ultra - VIP for 600,- EUR.

Celebrity guests - experience stars up close

An absolute highlight of Vienna Comic Con are the star guests, who are not only available to sign autographs and take photos, but also talk about their lives and careers in exciting panels. 2024 included, among others:

Michael Winslow - The „man of 10,000 sound effects“, known from Police Academy, thrilled the audience with his impressive voice and sound imitations.

Elfie Donnelly - The author and creator of Benjamin Blümchen and Bibi Blocksberg gave exciting insights into her work.

Vincent Regan - Known from films like 300, Troy and Snow White & The Huntsman.

Claudia Christian - Actress from the cult series Babylon 5.

Frank Cho - An internationally acclaimed comic artist known for his detailed drawings and his work for Marvel and DC Comics is known.

In addition to the actors and authors, numerous dubbing actors were also present, giving fans the opportunity to experience the voices of their favourite characters live.

Cosplay - creativity and perfection

Cosplay was once again a major theme at VIECC 2024. Numerous fans slipped into elaborate costumes and transformed Messe Wien into a colourful world full of fantasy characters. The VIECC offered various competitions, including

VIECC® Cosplay Championships - The main competition, in which the best cosplays were honoured.

VIECC® DACH Cosplay Cup - Season 1 - A new competition that brought together cosplayers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Kids Cosplay Contest - For the youngest cosplayers, who impressed with their creativity.

There were also numerous workshops in which experienced cosplayers shared their tips and tricks for the perfect appearance.

Artist Alley - experience art up close

This year's Artist Alley was once again a magnet for anyone interested in comics, illustrations and fan art. Numerous artists presented their works, gave live drawing demos and were available to talk to fans. Here you could not only get hold of signed prints and original drawings, but also commission exclusive individual pieces.

A paradise for gamers at the Vienna Comic Con 2024

Gaming fans got their money's worth in the gaming area. In addition to the latest games, which could be tried out for free, there were also several tournaments for eSports enthusiasts. Among other things, you could Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and compete with other gamers in various competitions.

Retailers & exhibitors - from merchandise to high-tech

Numerous retailers presented their product ranges in the halls of Messe Wien. Whether comics, collectible figures, clothing, video games or handmade accessories - there was plenty for fans to discover. Some of the best-known exhibitors in 2024 were

Otaku Heaven - A paradise for anime and manga fans.

ASH - Austrian Superheroes - Austria's own superhero comics.

Smart Extruders - 3D printing technology for creative minds.

SLAP - A supplier of pop culture merchandise and collectibles.

Seras Clothing - A label for themed clothing with unique designs.

Post Austria - With limited collector's stamps and exclusive merchandise.

Panels, workshops and interactive sessions

Vienna Comic Con would not be complete without its extensive programme of panels and workshops. Fans had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of their favourite films and series, learn more about the work of voice actors and get valuable tips on drawing or costume design from experienced artists, while the panels with star guests, in which they told anecdotes from their lives and answered questions from the audience, were particularly well attended.

Food & drink - Catering for all tastes

VIECC 2024 also catered for the physical well-being of its visitors. Numerous food trucks and food stands offered a wide selection of dishes - from traditional snacks to vegan specialities. The „Geek Café“, where you could make new friends over a cup of coffee in a relaxed atmosphere, was particularly popular again this year.

An unforgettable weekend at the Vienna Comic Con 2024 - my conclusion

The stages and star guests were great, the artists and exhibitors were simply fantastic and, for me as a little nerd and collector, the merchandise stands should not be forgotten. In my opinion, however, the greatest praise goes to all the cosplayers. The effort and expense that is put into every single cosplay is simply amazing for me. I mustn't forget the food trucks, which provided all the visitors with energy. There was something for everyone here too, with a wide variety of dishes - with meat, vegetarian and vegan options. Nobody had to go hungry at this convention.

Vienna Comic Con 2024 was a complete success and offered fans from all areas an unforgettable time. Whether through encounters with stars, exciting gaming experiences or marvelling at breathtaking cosplays - VIECC 2024 has once again established itself as one of the highlights of the year. The next VIECC will take place on 22 and 23 November 2025. It will be interesting to see what surprises the organisers have in store for next year!

We wanted to bring a bit of variety into our everyday lives. Not always go running or hiking, but simply go for a nice bike ride. Our plan was to cycle from Schwanenstadt to Vienna in 4 days to eat a burger at Front Food. Of course, Emma, my Jack Russell Terrier dog, was also at the start and was transported in a basket on the handlebars. In this article, I would like to tell you what the Danube cycle path was like for the three of us and how we got on.

The Danube cycle path - our preparations

 You should definitely have a certain basic level of fitness for such a long tour. You should also do some conscious training beforehand and cover a few kilometres by bike. I neglected this somewhat and of course it was noticeable. Apart from my general problems on longer bike rides lasting several days, such as the pain in my bum every time I sat down from the second day onwards or the pulling in my thighs from the third day onwards. No, on the last day my left knee also hurt enormously.

I could possibly have prevented this pain in my knee and also in my thighs with sufficient training. I can't say that it was due to insufficient preparation, but I would just like to say: always prepare yourself as well as possible for such adventures. Of course, there are people for whom something like this is easily achievable, even in one day. However, these tips are for people like me who don't do sport on a regular basis and need support on such tours.

The planning

Of course, as with any excursion or holiday, a certain amount of planning is required. For our cycle tour, we started by planning where we would get on the Danube cycle path and the best way to get there from home. We then put together a tour via Komoot and now knew what our route would look like.

Next, we had to think about how long we wanted to be on the road and how long our individual stages would be. As I was also taking Emma with me, I didn't want to cycle more than 100 kilometres a day and didn't want to overdo it. The whole tour was around 300 kilometres, so we thought we would cycle an average of around 80 kilometres a day and split the bike trip into 4 days. Of course, this was only a rough initial plan and it always depends on the day.

Step number three for us was to check where accommodation was available along the way and whether there was enough choice. We then decided to book the hotel for the first day as soon as we had planned it and thus decided on the first stage. We then looked for the subsequent accommodation on the respective day. This meant we didn't have to cover a certain distance and could be a little more flexible. If we'd had a bad day or even broken down, we could have looked for accommodation nearby. If we were really fit and wanted to continue after 80 kilometres, we could just keep going. On the whole, it worked pretty well, of course there were always small difficulties, but that's just part of it.

Last but not least, the only thing missing was the luggage, which of course should only contain the bare essentials. I'll write you a little guide for this. This varies slightly for everyone, but you can use it as a guide.

The individual stages

Day 1: from Schwanenstadt to St. Magdalena

This stage will of course be different for you, as you will probably start at home. For us, we first cycled for around 30 kilometres along the Traun river on a gravel path to Wels and towards Marchtrenk. The route then led us via Holzhausen and Alkoven to the start of the Danube cycle path. On the first day, we cycled another 20 kilometres or so to St. Magdalena, where our accommodation was located. 

Day 2: from St. Magdalena to Pöchlarn

This was the worst day for me: the last 20 kilometres and the motel where we spent the night were just horrendous. But the majority of this stretch was simply beautiful. You mostly cycle along the Danube for 4 days, but there are always beautiful sections or villages. Like on day 2: Grein and the subsequent ferry ride were definitely a little highlight for me.

Day 3: from Pöchlarn to Tulln an der Donau

For me, it was actually the best day of our cycle tour. We started off by cycling through the Wachau, through beautiful little villages with views of the many vineyards. Then there was a trip on the ferry, which I just loved. A small highlight of the day was cycling past the nuclear power plant in Zwentendorf, which was also interesting to see. 

Day 4: from Tulln on the Danube to Vienna

It was our most leisurely day on the Danube cycle path. Although we only covered around 75 kilometres on the first stage, the following stages were somewhat longer. So we only had just under 40 kilometres left for the last day before we arrived at the Westbahnhof station in Vienna and, after a refreshment stop at Front Food, boarded the next Westbahn train. Once we arrived at the train station in Attnang, we then had to cycle another 10 kilometres home, completing just under 50 kilometres for the day.

The Danube cycle path - my conclusion

This was my third multi-day cycle tour, having already travelled to Italy twice. The Danube cycle path can definitely hold its own here. My idea for this year was a cycling trip with Emma, because I like to experience such adventures with her. Too many gravel paths or too many climbs are not ideal for this. The Danube cycle path was the solution - perfect conditions for experiencing something like this with your darling. But this trip is not only ideal for this constellation. The Danube cycle path is suitable for so many things. A long tour from Passau to Bratislava on a racing bike, a leisurely ride with the children or a nice trip for two.

With this marvellous view, it's simply a pleasure to go for a ride. But it's not just the scenery that makes this tour so great. All the little extras along the Danube cycle path also make this tour so great. Like the ferry rides or the nuclear power plant in Zwentendorf, just to name two. Simply a great experience with physical and emotional ups and downs - they are just part of it. But the best thing was that it worked so well with Emma. A smooth ride on tarmac, she was always in top form, in a good mood and dogs were welcome wherever we took a break. For me, it's clearly already one of my highlights of 2024, and I think Eli really enjoyed it too.

The Christmas market on Spittelberg is definitely one of my favourite Advent markets. We take around 4 hours travelling time by train to try our way through the vegan variety at this Christmas market in Spittelberg. Despite the narrow alleyways and the crowds, you can enjoy a great Christmas atmosphere here - at a fair price for the individual dishes, snacks and drinks.

For us vegans from the countryside, it's always an absolute highlight, as there are many vegan alternatives here.

Eco-event Spittelberg goes Green! Vegan, organic, ecological ...

The climate is very important to us at Spittelberg. And that's why we will be organising this year's Christmas Market 2023 as an „eco-event“. A good ecological footprint, fairly traded or produced, local, regional and/or organic, vegetarian or vegan, resource-conserving and sustainable. That's what we want and what we want to offer our visitors this Advent. They will love it. For sure. Because the climate is important to us.

We can only confirm this - at least from a visitor's point of view. A really lovely and well thought-out Advent market that has something for everyone. The Christmas market on Spittelberg is a model Advent market for us, which we now visit at least once a year - despite our long journey.

From drinks and snacks to main dishes, sweets, decorations, home-made items, wooden baskets, illuminated stars and glassware - there's something for everyone!

We travelled very easily to Vienna Westbahnhof on the Westbahn. Then we took the U3 towards Simmering, where we got off at the Volkstheater. From here, it's less than a 10-minute walk to the Christmas market on Spittelberg.

Our snack marathon

We really filled our stomachs last weekend. Our aim was to make sure that the long journey out was definitely worth it.

We started with the vegan grammel & Tyrolean dumplings from Jablonski. 

Then we went to the arepas from Venezuela, where we also tried the vegan version.

Of course, there was also punch in between.

Next stop: the vegan Tiroler Gröstl

Of course, there was then a dessert - a vegan Kaiserschmarrn with stewed plums

After that, we also tried the vegan waffles, vegan arancini, and a vegan Bosna from Pflanzerei. Everything was absolutely delicious and the two of us had our work cut out to fit it all in, hahaha.

My summary of the Christmas market on Spittelberg

This Christmas market at Spittelberg is an absolute highlight for me. Whether vegan or not – you'll definitely get your money's worth here and can experience this Christmas market in so many different ways. It's also great value for money – the prices are absolutely fair.

I'm already looking forward to next year!

We were at the Vienna Comic Con 2023 and we were not alone, an incredible 39,000 visitors from all over Europe were there. Stars and artists of all kinds, countless exhibitors, fantastic cosplays and merchandise as far as the eye can see.

Programme at the Vienna Comic Con 2023

There were plenty of different stages with a wide variety of programmes again this year. So many that it's impossible to list everything in a blog post like this. But I would still like to give you a little insight. What I particularly liked, what was part of the programme for me and also something new this year.

Actors, dubbing actors and artists were present on the main stage throughout the weekend. Interviews were conducted, live drawings were made and there was also a cosplay championship. The Mainstage is a must for me, where I always pop in from time to time.

And of course, as every year, you get the chance to meet one of your idols at the VIECC, talk to them briefly and get a photo and/or autograph. In 2023, there was definitely someone here for everyone who they had always wanted to see live - for me, this is a very special highlight at such events. Being so close to a star you've perhaps been following on TV for ages is something very special. You had to pay extra for both, but unfortunately I couldn't find any more price lists.

New at the Vienna Comic Con 2023 was the Drag Queen Stage. The atmosphere there was amazing. Everyone was in a good mood, the chairs were all occupied and the VIECC visitors gathered around. The performances I saw were awesome - damn they knew how to put on a show. This was really just a small insight, or rather these were just my little highlights from the programme and the stages.

• Mahmud Asrar - was announced as the illustrator of the new Avengers series „All-New, All-Different Avengers“ as part of the „reorganisation“ of the Marvel comic hero world („Secret Wars“). 

Authors and content creators

• Liza Grimm - Her debut novel „The Gods of Asgard“ will be published in 2018, but I knew Liza from the Talus book series.
• Katazuri - From gaming to pen and paper - from Instagram to Tik Tok to Twitch, it's everywhere. 

Dubbing actors and cosplay guests

Hans-Georg Panczak - For me, one of the first film voices I heard and knew. I'm an absolute Star Wars fan, they were the first films I „consciously“ saw and here he lends his voice to Luke Skywalker aka Mark Hamill.

Kodiak Cosplay - a cosplayer from Hamburg who has been working as a cosplayer since 2014 and these are also impressive - simply amazing.

For me, it was even better this year than in 2022. Everything was much better organised and, in my opinion, the halls were bigger. Maybe Sunday is simply the better day to visit, which it was - because I liked it more. I think if you've read this far, you've already realised how enthusiastic I was about VIECC 2023.

 

The stages and star guests were great, the artists and exhibitors were simply fantastic and, for me as a little nerd and collector, the merchandise stands should not be forgotten. In my opinion, however, the greatest praise goes to all the cosplayers. The effort and expense that is put into every single cosplay is simply amazing for me.

After a long „pandemic break“, Friday the 13th was our lucky day. The Game City was back and the rush was huge. Whether you're young or old, if you're into the gaming scene, you'll definitely get your money's worth here. Find out what it was like for us and what you can hopefully look forward to in 2024 in this article.

Directions and parking facilities

By car

Take the motorway in the direction of Vienna via the A1. Follow the motorway to Wientalstraße - keep left at the fork and continue on the B1 along Keißlergasse and the B223 to Rathausplatz. There are a few car parks available here. For me, the most practical solution would be the BOE Garage Rathauspark - 580 parking spaces and a price of €4 per hour.

By public transport

With public transport, you can easily hop on a Westabahn train and get to Vienna Westbahnhof in no time at all. From here, all you have to do is take the U3 to the Volkstheater or Herrengasse and after a 10-minute walk you will have reached your destination.

For this excursion destination, I have to say that it doesn't matter whether you go by car or public transport. By car, it's 90 % via the motorway and you only have to drive about 25 minutes off the A1. The disadvantages of travelling by car are clearly the stress in city traffic, the increased effort for the driver and also the environmental aspects. Travelling by train allows you to relax completely and arrive at your events feeling relaxed. The only disadvantage is that you should book your ticket as soon as possible, otherwise the return journey can be expensive. 

What you can expect at Game City and what is on offer

I'm not going to go into all 110 exhibitors (Here is the list) in detail. But I will tell you what the best moments and attractions were for me personally. As a little Nintendo fan, I was of course delighted to see how many consoles were on site where you could play various games such as Mario Kart, Splatoon and Super Mario Bros Wonder. There was also a retro console corner. As I have a selection of old consoles at home myself and am a passionate collector, it was particularly nice for me to see that forgotten devices often still make an appearance. If you want to visit Game City 2023 with the whole family, you definitely can. Because there is also a children's room and a +18 room to ensure there is something for everyone.

What was new to me was that nowadays even the health of gamblers is taken into account. GEDS is a health platform for children. What was really great for me was to see such a company represented at a gaming event. There was also an exciting laser tag area, a Just Dance dance floor and a „skateboard wave“. So there was not only the opportunity to play games, but also to really let off steam. 

After all the head training on the consoles and the physical exertion after a Just Dance session, what should not be missing? - A really tasty meal to recharge your batteries. Here, too, there was a good selection and something for everyone. For me, of course, there was meatless food from Planted a kebab and what can I say, it was unbelievably delicious. Strengthened, we continued on our way. What I always do, regardless of the event, is pick up a souvenir. The last stop for me at Game City 2023 was a merchandise tent where you could pick up something for your inner child.

The location - Vienna City Hall

For me, this was the highlight of the whole event. Normally you're used to halls where such events take place. But not Game City 2023: I think it's unbelievably great that a gaming event is taking place in Vienna City Hall. I also really liked the support and presence of Deputy Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr at this event. You could tell that he also has a little gamer in him and that Game City is a nice nostalgia trip.

My summary of Game City 2023

I only knew about this event from hearsay, but hadn't yet had the chance to attend one. Game City to visit. Last week the time had finally come. I can't tell you if and what was better or worse compared to previous years. But I can tell you how I perceived the event this year.

First of all, I have to mention that it was a free entry compared to most other events in this genre. In other words, no matter what you were hoping for or what was waiting for you there, you didn't have to pay for it. Which is really remarkable for me. To put so much effort and energy into such an event and offer it for free, I take my hat off to them. As Nintendo shaped my childhood, it was a little trip back to a wonderful time for me. It was also possible to play on the existing retro consoles such as Atari or Sega - a dream for every little nerd.

The next place that amazed me at Game City 2023 was definitely Vienna City Hall. Old charm and stylish furnishings meet the gaming scene. What a picture - opposites that attract. I don't think there's a better way to describe it. There were also plenty of food options for my taste. Whether meat, vegetarian or vegan, everyone got their money's worth here. 

Of course, not everything was perfect. I don't think that's possible at an event like this and it's not a must. But you also have to address these small points as feedback. How else should an organiser improve or know that fans were not completely satisfied with certain points. In my personal opinion, there were two things that weren't bad, but that could perhaps be thought about in 2024 and could be improved.

Firstly, it was the drinks counter. I only saw 2 stands and you only got everything in cups. I can understand that with certain drinks. But if I'm thirsty and I take a bottle of mineral water, the advantage for me is that I can take it with me and close it again. My second suggestion for improvement. As I'm a big Xbox fan and generally like to browse through the huge selection of consoles and games, I would have liked to see rooms just for Xbox/Microsoft or Playstation/Sony. 

All in all, I can only say that Game City 2023 was a successful event for me. The best location I've ever seen. A large selection of Nintendo consoles to play yourself - lots of different exhibitors and free entry to boot. Whether young or old, everyone really had fun here. In conclusion, I can only say goodbye Game City 2023, it was a great pleasure and we will definitely see each other again in 2024.

On 1 October 2023, the animal welfare run took place for the 12th time in various distances in the Prater Hauptallee in Vienna. The fantastic event was organised by the Vegan Society Austria together with the Vienna Animal Welfare Association Tierschutz Austria and my Sports club Team Vegan.at.

Leider konnte ich aufgrund meiner Erkältung nicht selbst mitlaufen, war aber trotzdem für euch vor Ort und habe dafür ein tolles Instagram-Reel mitgebracht .

Introduction of Team Vegan.at

In my Veganmania & Veggie Planet reports I have already gone into more detail about the Vegan Society Austria, which is why today I am writing this part of the blog post my association Team Vegan.at dedicate.

Team Vegan.at is the first vegan sports club in Austria and serves, among other things, to promote the sporting activities of vegan athletes in both competitive and popular sports.

You can see this sentence at first glance when you visit the club's website. Various sports disciplines, team training, athletics sessions, running groups, vegan get-togethers and much more are what make up the club and bring the team members closer together every day. 

As a new member, I was given a very warm welcome and am delighted to be part of the incredibly great and friendly team.

By the way: there are already some team members in Upper Austria, which is why we can also hold regular get-togethers here. If you would like to join us, please come along!

Starting signal - the Animal Welfare Run 2023 got underway straight after the warm-up!

Beaming faces and motivated runners waited at the start for the countdown to end. While the toddler and school run had already taken place in the morning, the „starting shot“ (without a shot, of course) for the main competition was fired at 1.30 pm. 

5 Minuten später starteten die 5 km Nordic-Walker und gaben richtig Gummi. Um ehrlich zu gestehen: Ich hatte absolut keine Ahnung, dass man so schnell Nordic-Walken kann

15 Minuten und 27,6 Sekunden nach dem Start des Hauptlaufs lief auch schon der erste Athlet über die Ziellinie – absoluter Wahnsinn!

Alle Athlet:innen haben hier an diesem Tag alles geben und eine absolut fantastische Leistung hingelegt. Ich war richtig geflasht – normal nehme ich ja selbst an Läufen teil und bekomm das tatsächlich nicht mit, wenn die ersten ins Ziel laufen.

My summary of the Animal Welfare Run 2023 on the Prater Hauptallee in Vienna

It was a shame that I couldn't run with them myself - but it was still a really great day for me. I was able to accompany all the athletes from the relaxed run-in to the warm-up, through the start and then to the finish - with my camera. It was a new experience for me to see such an event from the other side and it gave me the motivation to take part as a runner next year.

Thanks to the organisers, to the organisation team, but above all thanks to all animal welfare enthusiasts who made the day what it was: an important sign for animal welfare!

At last! I've been waiting for this for so long and I was full of motivation. In fact, it's not my first time taking part in the Wings for Life World Run, denn ich war bereits letztes Jahr per App Run dabei.

Es gab jedoch einen großen Unterschied: Letztes Jahr war ich weniger trainiert und begann erst etwa 6 Monate vor dem Wings for Life Run 2022 mit dem Laufen, wobei ich noch 25 kg mehr auf den Hüften hatte. Nach meiner Diät schaffte ich damals unglaubliche 16,29 km! Das hat mich so sehr motiviert, dass ich dieses Jahr spontan am Flagship Run teilnehmen wollte – ich wollte die Stimmung in Wien nicht verpassen.

Preparation and training for Wings for Life 2023

Anyone who is familiar with my reports will also recognise my - for me very emotional - Report from the Linz Half Marathon 2022 bekannt sein. An diesem Tag habe ich eine persönliche Bestzeit erreicht und war unglaublich stolz auf mich. Das hat mein Feuer entfacht – ich wollte mehr, schneller, weiter!

So I drew up a training plan to continuously improve - said and done! Since December 2022, I have been running between 9 and 20 kilometres 5 times a week and have completed various training sessions.

But then it happened...

How corona ruined my training for Wings for Life 2023

Hui – was für eine reißerische Überschrift Aber leider ist es wahr. Trotz dreifacher Impfung und dem Gefühl der Unbesiegbarkeit habe auch ich das blöde Virus erwischt. Und wie ich es erwischt habe… Bisher dachte ich, dass der typische „Männerschnupfen“ das Schlimmste ist, aber nein, es ist definitiv Corona.

In order not to get off topic, I'll keep it short: Corona cost me about 5 months of my training. My muscles were still there, but my stamina wasn't.

Nach 3 Wochen habe ich mich wieder zu einer kleinen Laufrunde aufgerafft und versucht, mich allmählich zu steigern. Es war einfach nur … nun ja … scheiße, um es milde auszudrücken.

What happened to my training plan?

Impatient as I am, I wanted to make up for the lost training and continued to train intensively according to the motto „try harder“ instead of „try better“.

And then it happened - a shin split. I didn't want to admit it and just kept training until I couldn't run at all.

Nun ja, wie soll ich sagen, ein Monat Pause und wieder zurück zum Anfang.

Evil just doesn't want me to run and prevents me from getting better!1!!!11!

NO! I stopped myself - I didn't listen to my body and tried to demand the impossible from it. And that was the price I paid.

After my enforced break, I started running again in April very slowly and just for fun - because that's what it's all about - having fun! And that also applies to the Wings For Life World Run! You run for fun for all those who can't. And you're supporting a great cause at the same time!

Der Spaß war mein Grund für das Laufen – das habe ich wieder erkannt.

The time had come, the starting signal was given for the Wings for Life Flagship Run 2023 in Vienna.

Despite everything that happened, I was confident and really looking forward to the run.

Originally I had only registered for the App Run, but 3 weeks beforehand I was able to get one of the remaining places for the Flagship Run in Vienna to be part of this great event on site.

Travelling to the Wings for Life Run

I am very easy with the Westbahn zum Wiener Westbahnhof gereist und dann mit der U3 zum Volksgarten gefahren. Von dort aus bin ich zu Fuß am Rathaus vorbei zur Universität gegangen, um meine Startnummer, mein Shirt und mein Goodie-Bag abzuholen.

Unfortunately, I searched in vain for the cloakrooms marked on the map. After asking several times, I realised that there were none.

Das Gepäck konnte man mit der Startnummer zu den Post-Lastwagen-Containern bringen, wo es sicher aufbewahrt wurde. Man konnte es dann wieder mit der jeweiligen Startnummer am Shirt abholen.

I would like to take this opportunity to praise all the helpers who made sure everything ran smoothly! You guys are great!

Off to the starting block!

Everyone who registered early enough had their name and starting block on their race number (you had to state your best marathon or half marathon time when registering). All the last-minute registrants like me had a non-personalised race number without a starting block.

Nevertheless, I was able to line up in starting block 2 and choose my optimum pace.

Leider war der Start sehr mühsam, da offensichtlich einige vor mir nicht im richtigen Block standen. Das hat bei vielen schnelleren Läufern Frust ausgelöst, da sie die ersten Kilometer damit verbringen mussten, sich durchzukämpfen, wenn sie auf eine persönliche Bestzeit aus waren.

Cheers, adrenalin and feelings of happiness - let's go!

From kilometre 2-3 the crowd had spread out nicely and the course was perfect for putting the pedal to the metal - it was great! The surroundings, the atmosphere, the tour through the city and the route - a dream!

So I ran there surrounded by people who all wanted the same thing: To run and help! Because everyone who started donated their entry fee.

Some even increased the amount, and I also received additional support from my family. As a result konnte ich dieses Jahr 125,90 € für die Rückenmarksforschung sammeln.

The catering stations were also well distributed and very well equipped.

All in all, it was a great run that was great fun!

My summary of the Wings for Life World Run 2023 - Flagship Run Vienna

Es war ein toller Tag und eine großartige Atmosphäre – ich kann die Veranstaltung auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen, und zwar an alle. Egal, ob Läufer, Rollstuhlfahrer, Nordic Walker oder Spaziergänger. Es geht schließlich um den Spaß und den guten Zweck. An diesem Tag sind alle Sieger!

However, there was one thing that my little bald head completely underestimated, and that was the sun. When I had a circulatory collapse on the way home at Vienna Westbahnhof, I initially thought it was due to overexertion. When I got home, I realised how extremely red my head was - it must have been heatstroke. Another lesson learnt.

After a few hours I was back in my right mind and could be happy about my performance - because I had exceeded my goal!

I ran 27.2 km, even though I had only set myself a target of 25 kilometres. So it was a complete success, and I'm really looking forward to next year - possibly via app again - but with headgear and sun cream.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this great event, especially the volunteers who made the impossible possible!

Harry Potter: The Exhibition - A little moment of nostalgia for me. A journey back in time, to a wonderful childhood. Like many others, the films have accompanied me over the years. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone hit cinema screens in 2001 and an era ended in 2011 with Deathly Hallows - Part 2. For 10 years, we were all accompanied by the magical world of Harry Potter. That's why it was one of the best moments for me in 2022 that we were invited to the exhibition in Vienna. 

Kurzer Einblick in die Ausstellung – keine Panik hier wird noch nichts gespoilert. Es erwarten dich Charaktere, Tierwesen, Schauplätze, bekannte Szenen aus den Filmen und Geschichten über Harry Potter und der dazugehörigen Wizarding World. A MAGICAL experience - with new, innovative and interactive technology. If that's still not enough for you, the original props and costumes will blow your mind. No matter how old you are, which house you belong to or whether you are a muggle. None of that matters here. 

Wizarding World - what is it?

The Wizarding World is nothing more than an ever-expanding „universe“. From the first letter from Hogwarts, through the wall to Platform 9 3/4, visiting Mr Ollivander, Hedwig - Ron - Hermione or the best chess game ever played. These moments, the 8 blockbuster films based on the original stories by J. K. Rowling were the beginning of all these magical stories.

The Wizarding World is not just made up of the Harry Potter films. This vast, interlocking universe also includes three Fantastic Beasts films, the multi-award-winning play: Harry Potter and the Enchanted Child, video and mobile games and much, much more. The Wizarding World is constantly evolving to offer Potterheads new and exciting ways to engage with it. It invites the global fan community and all future generations to explore and discover the magic for themselves.

Directions and parking - what options do you have to get to Harry Potter: The Exhibition?

Travelling by public transport

The best option for me personally. Perfectly plannable in advance, no unnecessary stress with traffic or the hassle of looking for a parking space. Just sit down, enjoy the journey and do something good for the environment to boot. A little tip from me: buy tickets as soon as possible, the earlier you get a ticket, the cheaper the journey will be for you.

Take the train either to the main station and then take the S80 or the regional train R81 to the Erzherzog-Karl-Straße stop and get directly to the METAstadt. Another option would be to travel by train to Hütteldorf, then take the S-Bahn S80 and also travel to Erzherzog-Karl-Straße.

Travelling by car

By car you could drive right up to the front door of the METAstadt get there. However, I would not recommend this due to the limited number of parking spaces. The better option would be to take the Westautobahn motorway to the P&R facility in Hütteldorf and park there. From here, take the S-Bahn S80 and continue as usual to the Erzherzog-Karl-Straße stop. 

Opening times and venues of Harry Potter: The Exhibition

From today, 16 December 2022, you can visit „Harry Potter: The Exhibition“. The gates will be open for you every day from 09:00 - 21:30 in Vienna's METAstadt, with the only exceptions being 24 and 25 December, when the exhibition will be completely closed, on 31 December only until 19:00 and on 1 January only from 12:00. The last admission is from 20:00 or 90 minutes before the METAstadt closes again.

From 09 January 2023, the opening hours will change as follows: 

• Mon - Thu from 10:00 to 19:00
• Friday from 10:00 to 20:30
• Saturday from 09:00 to 20:30
• Sunday from 09:00 to 19:30

Venues

World premieres have already been celebrated in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania in the USA and with Vienna, Harry Potter: the Exhibition is now also represented in Europe. However, the end is not yet in sight. A worldwide tour is planned in Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Tickets and prices

The exhibition offers a wide variety of tickets, offers and discounts to provide everyone with the right choice.

Standard ticket: is available from € 29.99. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as during holiday periods, standard tickets are available for € 34.90. For children and young people up to the age of 15, students up to the age of 26 and senior citizens aged 65 and over, the standard ticket is available from € 24.99 and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as during holiday periods for € 29.99.

Standard tickets are limited to one day and a 30-minute time slot, which is selected at the time of purchase. The interactive experience can be started within this time slot and you should allow around 60-90 minutes for the personalised journey.

Flextime - Tickets: If you are still looking for a suitable Christmas present, then the Flextime ticket is perfect. Not just for Potterheads, but for anyone who wants to go on a fun day out and enjoy trying out new things. For €49.99 you get a flexible, one-off visit for the entire duration of your stay in Vienna.

VIP tickets: For € 74.90, visitors can enjoy a very special experience and also benefit from some exclusive advantages. The VIP tickets are issued on the desired date of visit when purchased, allowing you to visit the exhibition on any day. Of course, admission to the interactive experience can only be granted up to 90 minutes before the end of the day.

Family - Ticket: it includes 2 adults and 2 children for € 99.60 (€ 24.99/person). On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays this is available for € 29.90 / person (total price € 116.60). Available with the standard tickets under Discounts & Booking Options.

Wheelchair users and people with disabilities: (from 80 % according to ID) can book tickets at a reduced price via the oeticket hotline 0900 94 96 096 (€ 1.09/min incl. VAT).

What's on offer - Attractions - Details

The first thing we had to do at the entrance to Harry Potter: The Exhibition was to register. This is also where we received our wristband for the interactive stations. You register with the wristband and then start your own personal story. Choose the house you want to belong to, choose your favourite from dozens of wands and decide on the Patronus you've always wanted. Once you've done that, you can have your photo taken and then you're ready to go. I decided on Gryffindor, Lord Voldemort's wand and I chose the terrier as my Patronus.

First stop:

A room with small clips from the films and a beautiful animated Hogwarts castle in the background. Once the sequences have been played, the walls turn into the map of the Drifter and the first interactive station is ready. You can use your wristband to log in to certain points by holding it up to a golden snitch. No sooner said than done! You are now part of the map and your name is displayed. With the words „Misdeed committed“, we move on to the next room. Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are all represented. Props such as the talking hat or Godric Gryffindor's sword, costumes from the Harry Potter films, but also from the play - The Enchanted Child and lots of information about all of this can be found here. You can also collect your first points here and who hasn't always wanted a photo with the talking hat? Get assigned to your house and grab the first 10 points for your team.

The next room is already waiting for you:

Glaskugeln, die bei genauerer Betrachtung etwas für dich bereit halten, eine Tasse mit einem Teeblättersatz in der Form eines Hundes oder besser bekannt als Grimm. Wir sind wohl bei Sybill Trelawney gelandet, dieser Raum wurde von mir aber etwas schneller absolviert, denn wer glaubt schon ans Wahrsagen. Spaß bei Seite, ich will nur schnell weiter, denn jetzt kommen zwei meiner Lieblingsräume. Was glaubst du, wobei ich schon immer mein Können unter Beweis stellen wollte? Ja, klar, eine Alraune umtopfen, das wollte doch jeder. Nur nicht die Ohrschützer vergessen und kontrolliert, dass sie gut sitzen – das Ergebnis kennen wir ja sonst alle. Auf was ich mich auch besonders gefreut habe, war Hagrids Hütte – einmal in seinem riesigen Sessel sitzen und hoffen, dass er genau so gemütlich ist, wie er aussieht.

Make a decision:

Take part in the Triwizard Tournament and take the trophy home with you or would you prefer a round of Quidditch? After my eyes wandered to the Hungarian Horntail, it wasn't too difficult for me to decide and I naturally opted for Quidditch. Then it was off to the next Portkey and a little detour to see Newt Scamander and his Fantastic Beasts. A visit to the Ministry is of course a must, even if you have to stop by Dolores Umbridge and her office. I found the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets very impressive, a visual highlight for me that day. You also get a glimpse of a few Horcruxes before you reach Albus Dumbledore's room and his Think Tank.

Interactive stations

Cross the large hall with the flying candles to reach the magic wands, the second station where you can collect points for your house. Here you can put your wagging and waving skills to the test. Will you be able to do it straight away like Hermione or will you have to learn the correct pronunciation of Wingardium Leviosa first? Not only do you have to master the use of the magic wand, potions are also on the timetable. You can choose from 5 potions, which one have you always wanted to brew - for me it's definitely the Polyjuice Potion. Once you have mastered everything, you will have collected 30 points for your house and your colleagues will be grateful.

What is your greatest fear? - If you dare to face it, don't forget to think of something funny and use Riddikulus to make a spider dance on roller skates, burst a full moon or turn a snake into a clown. One of my absolute favourite spells is Expecto Patronum. A beautiful thought and carefully executed, I conjured up my Terrier Patronus and collected the last 10 points for my house.

The last room of the Harry Potter exhibition gives you the chance to duel with your friends and prove who is the strongest wizard among you. If you've done everything right, you'll have earned your house 40 points (assuming I haven't overlooked a point-collecting station) and defeated your companion in a daring duel.

Was unbedingt auch noch erwähnt werden muss, ist der Souvenirshop. Direkt im Anschluss an die Ausstellung gelangt man in dieses Paradies. Fanartikel, wohin das Auge reicht – für einen Potterhead ein wahrgewordener Traum. Aber nicht nur der eingefleischte Fan fühlt sich hier wohl, auch Neulinge in der Wizarding World finden hier so manches Souvenir. Natürlich habe auch ich mich dazu verleiten lassen und mir das ein oder andere mit nach Hause genommen.

My overall impression of Harry Potter: The Exhibition

A great trip for me personally. For €34.90 you get a really great tour through the magical world of Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and much more. You are offered a large selection of film props and there is no shortage of costumes either. Everything is very well signposted with lots of information and there are photos of the characters in every room. My only criticism is the interactive stations. Not because I didn't like them, on the contrary, I enjoyed them so much that I would have liked more of them.

Are you one of those sad Muggles like me who are still waiting for a letter from Hogwarts at the age of 26? Then now is the time, because even No-Majs without a letter will be granted entry to METAstadt. So grab your owl, meet your friends at platform 9 3/4 and take the next train to Harry Potter: the Exhibition in Vienna.

Mit veganes Wild essen meine ich genau was ich schreibe – und zwar das Vegansl von Bierosophie. Aber mal langsam – was bitte ist ein Vegansl? Ganz einfach: ein veganes Gansl! ==

Martini-Gansl is one of the top game dishes for many Austrians and is apparently a must on any game menu.

We travelled about 5.5 hours from Schwanenstadt to Vienna (there and back) to try the Vegansl here. I'll tell you one thing right now: it definitely paid off!

Mittlerweile ernähren sich viele Österreicher bewusst veggie oder vegan  – aus den verschiedensten Gründen – und müssen auf nichts mehr verzichten. Auch nicht auf den traditionell deftigen Geschmack vom Wild! Denn nun kann man auch veganes Wild essen – nämlich auch zum Beispiel das vegane Jack-Gansl von Bierosophie aus Jackfrucht.

Eat vegan game at Bierosophie - the beer pub with a difference

Bierosophie is offering Jack-Gansl for the 6th time this year and is certainly a pioneer in Austria with its sophisticated recipe. Thanks to many years of experience and tinkering, you are served top quality here and wonder why they haven't been on a plant-based diet for much longer.

I was also told that the vegan goose is now sold more often in this restaurant than the classic goose. 

The Bieresophie not only offers vegan game dishes, but also has many other vegan dishes and traditional meat dishes for meat lovers on the menu.

In addition to the Vegansl, you can find many other vegan dishes on the fantastic menu

Okay, admittedly, the restaurant's menu isn't the prettiest, but it's the inner values that count. And these have it all!

Despite the many traditional meat dishes, which are also worth mentioning, as a vegetarian I tend to concentrate on my plant-based friends. 

One thing first: the great selection has convinced me to come back here soon and try more dishes.

An excerpt of all the vegan dishes you can find on the menu

Jack-Gansl is not all that this somewhat different beer pub has to offer - no, there are numerous other promising dishes on the menu. These include, for example:

• Homemade cream of beer soup with croutons
• Vegan roast pork jackfruit in caraway juice, served with napkin dumplings and coleslaw
• Soya and onion roast Fried soya patties in onion sauce with potato wedges, fried onion and fan-shaped gherkins
• Krautfleckerln with spring onion and lettuce
• Homemade smoked jack dumplings (Jackfruit) with sauerkraut and caraway juice
• Minced jack loaf with jackfruit mince, served with potato salad, mustard and fresh horseradish
• Styrian duet Courgette carpaccio with lamb's lettuce, seed oil, Hirter beer vinegar, pumpkin seeds, scarlet runner beans, carrot salad, and a portion of Beetle bean mince
• Chestnut rice with sour cherries
• Homemade poppy seed pasta with stewed plums
• Warm chocolate brownie with mango sorbet

Martini goose delicacy:

• Cream of pumpkin soup with roasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil
• Vegan „beef“ tartare the vegan version of the classic, a very special composition (100 g), with chopped red onion, capers, gherkins, margarine and toast
• Jack goose Vegan Martini goose, jackfruit, with orange red cabbage, potato dumplings and cranberries

Should I book a table for a vegan game dinner?

Definitely. The two-storey restaurant is large - especially in the colder seasons - but fills up quickly. In summer, the in-house beer garden is open and offers a few additional seats.

The reservation works simply online oder ganz klassisch telefonisch. (Achtung: die Reservierungsbestätigung wird online händisch bearbeitet und kommt nicht unmittelbar danach. Meine Reservierung wurde sehr flott bestätigt und befand sich im Spam Ordner.)

Directions and location:

I recommend going to the restaurant in Vienna Ottakring by public transport.

As we only travelled to Vienna for this restaurant, our climate ticket was perfect for this.

If you do not have a climate ticket, you can mit der WestBahn und den WestSuperPreis-Tickets immer wieder günstige Tickets erwerben (Beispiel: Wels – Wien um €4,99)

We walked about 20 minutes from Vienna Central Station to the restaurant to earn our Vegansl.

Of course you can also use the Tram line 9 from Vienna Westbahnhof to Vienna Gerathof to station Vienna-Camillo-Sitte-Gasse take the bus. This takes about 9 minutes and the last few metres take 3 minutes on foot.

Furnishings and style of the Bierosophie

I would describe the interior style of the pub as classic, what you would imagine a beer pub to be. It is generally a little darker in design and furnishings, but has light nuances in the decor, such as the pictures on the walls or other decorations that you can find.

In general, I find it harmonious and pleasant. The stay is therefore cosy - and attention has been paid to this.

Staff and waiting time - how long does the meal take?

Even if the waiters were a little slow, they were always very friendly and courteous. You can also tell that they don't just sell the concept of the restaurant, but also live it.

During conversations, it immediately becomes clear that the restaurant is passionate about veganism and doesn't just cater to this target group as a niche. In fact, you sometimes get the impression that it's a vegan restaurant with a meat selection - instead of the other way round. That was my impression of the mindset conveyed.

My conclusion on the Vegansl of Bierosophy 

Also wie anfangs schon erwähnt, war es die gesamte Anreise absolut wert. Am liebsten hätte ich mir zum Vegansl die Jack-Selch-Knödel und das Käferbohnen-Verhackertes mitbestellt – aber ich habe mich für das Vegansl und die Marillenpalatschinken entschieden und das war absolut richtig so.

I took a portion of the minced scarlet runner beans home with me and it tasted amazing! Hats off!

My friend tried the chestnut rice and that also tasted great in combination with the sour cherries.
