The hike up the Großer Schoberstein has everything you need for a beautiful tour: a great trail, a lot of metres in altitude and a fantastic view of Lake Attersee, at the end of the hike is also perfect for cooling off. For me personally, it is no longer a beginner's mountain, but very Recommended for all those who are a little more confident.

It had been a while since I last did this tour. The time had finally come and I wondered why I had waited so long for it. Great forest and gravel paths lead you up to the summit cross for around 1.5 hours. Once you reach your destination, you are rewarded with a wonderful view of Lake Attersee.

By public transport:

Whether coming from Linz/Vienna or Salzburg, the first stop takes you by train to the Kammer-Schörfling railway station. A bus takes you directly from there to the Weißenbach/Attersee hiking car park. After 26 minutes and 15 stops, you will have reached the car park. From here you have to walk back a little and then turn right onto Weißenbacher Straße. Now you still have a 500-metre walk ahead of you, and you are already at the start of the hike up the Großer Schoberstein.

Car parking facilities:

Directly in front of the entrance or along the Weißenbachtal federal road there are a few car parks at the roadside. Even though there is certainly space for 30 to 40 (my rough estimate!) cars, you shouldn't be too late. These car parks are all subject to charges. You can park here for 6 hours for €4, which is definitely enough for the Großer Schoberstein.

Route description and key data for the hike to the Großer Schoberstein

From the car park, continue along the Weißenbachtal main road for another 200 to 300 metres on asphalt until you reach the start. Now you reach a beautiful forest path. It starts relatively flat here. It stays this way for about half a kilometre until the ascent begins. The serpentines take you further and further uphill on forest and gravel paths. You have the opportunity to take a break here again and again. Many benches invite you to do so with their fantastic views. The trail continues upwards for around three kilometres towards the summit cross.

Now it's time for the final spurt. The last 500 metres are waiting for you. The route continues along narrow gravel paths. You should take extra care with dogs and children from here onwards. Now you have a small „climbing passage“ ahead of you, where you have to climb over crampons and a somewhat steeper rock with the support of a wire rope. But don't panic, this section is very short and quickly overcome. Now you just have to climb a few more rocks and you've reached your destination. Once you reach the summit cross, it's time to recharge your batteries and enjoy the wonderful view of Lake Attersee. For the way back, simply take exactly the same route again - so at least you know what you're in for.

What else awaits you on the hike to the Großer Schoberstein

In summer

For me, a huge plus point of a hiking tour is always the opportunity to cool down and refresh afterwards. After the tour, you are right by the Attersee, where you can find a nice spot and relax at the end of the day.

More than just a summit - little insider tips

Are you not so keen on the hike to the Großer Schoberstein after all, or do you think something is missing here? No problem, you have more options if you tackle this route.

The small Schoberstein: In my opinion, it is rather unknown and often not very popular. The route contains small climbing passages and you should find out beforehand whether it will be too difficult or dangerous. Shortly before you reach the rocks on the Großer Schoberstein, you can turn slightly left and continue on the Kleiner Schoberstein.

Mahdlgupf - Dachsteinblick - Brennerin: If you want a slightly longer tour, you have a free choice here. You can either hike „only“ as far as the Mahdlgupf or go one stage further to the Dachsteinblick. If that's still not enough for you, the Brennerin is of course also available. But be sure to find out in advance how long this tour is, what the trail conditions are like and whether there is anything else you need to be aware of.

My summary of the hike up the Großer Schoberstein

There's only one question I have to ask myself: why did I wait so long to do this tour again? I can't explain it to myself. I can't explain it to myself. It was just unbelievably great - and not just for me! Emma also really enjoyed the hike up the Großer Schoberstein. It's exactly these paths that she really enjoys, and the length was perfect for a twelve-year-old Jack Russell terrier dog. Although there were places where I had to pick her up, she managed 90 % of the route herself.

The tour has one small drawback for me: there are almost no signposts. Although they are hardly needed at all, I was a little confused until about the first hairpin bend, where the ascent begins. But to be honest, I can cope with that. The wonderful forest and gravel paths with a great view of Lake Attersee, the beautiful rocky passages just before the summit cross and the unbelievably beautiful view once you reach the top are simply fantastic. For me, too, the length of the route and the metres of elevation gain are just perfect. A small plus point is, of course, that you can cool off in the Attersee after such a strenuous hike. I certainly won't wait that long to do this tour again. But maybe next time I'll continue on to the Mahdlgupf - we'll see.
