The Langbathsee lakes are among my absolute favourite destinations in the Salzkammergut, but this time I decided to take a slightly different route: the hike from the Taferlklaussee lake to the rear Langbathsee lake. I set off on this adventure in glorious spring weather, together with my four-legged friend Shaggy. Equipped with a mobile phone and drone to capture the beauty of the route, we set off to discover the connection between the picturesque Taferlklaussee and the breathtaking Langbathseen lakes.

Directions and parking options for the hike from Taferlklaussee to Hinterer Langbathsee:

We travelled to the Taferlklaussee hike in comfort by car, as unfortunately there are no public transport connections. The car park at Lake Taferlklaussee offered us an excellent starting point. From here, you can not only explore the Langbathsee lakes, but also other popular hiking destinations such as the Hochleckenkogel, the Hochleckenhaus or the Brunnkogel. This versatile starting point gave us an unforgettable start to our hiking adventure between the Taferlklaussee and the Langbathseen lakes.

Key data of the hike 

Here are a few key details about the hike from the Taferlklaussee to the Langbathseen lakes so that you are well prepared. The route is around 9 kilometres long and requires a certain level of fitness, as there are around 450 metres of altitude to conquer. Allow around 4 hours, including breaks, to enjoy nature to the full. It is important to be sure-footed, especially if you have children or dogs with you. Unfortunately, the trail is unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Our hike from Lake Taferlklaussee to Lake Langbathsee

Our hike began at 10am at the Taferlklaussee lake. A short stop allowed us to take a look at the lake. An interesting option for those who fancy it: you can also walk round the Taferlklaussee. The circuit is relatively short and definitely worth seeing.

We then continued slightly uphill towards the Langbathsee lake. The route was clearly signposted and we had also saved the route offline on our mobile phone to make sure we didn't get lost, especially as reception in the area is very limited. Most of the time, only the satellite emergency call was possible.

A detour to the Hohe Lueg offered us spectacular views before we continued on our way to the rear Langbathsee and turned back there.

The flexibility of the route makes it possible to adapt the tour as desired, be it by circling the Langbath lakes or visiting the Signalkogel. To make it easier for those who follow, my exact route can be found at the end of the article.

Refreshment stops during the hike

Für eine wohlverdiente Pause bieten sich während der Wanderung immer wieder attraktive Stopps für eine kurze Rast an. Leider gibt es keine Einkehrmöglichkeiten mit pflanzlichen Alternativen in der Nähe, weshalb ich empfehle, die Jause einfach selbst mitzubringen. Grundsätzlich käme ich bei der Tour ohne Jause aus, aber das Platzerl am hinteren Langbathsee lädt zu einer gemütlichen Pause ein, weshalb ein Snack hier zwingend notwendig ist.

The conclusion of my hike from the Taferlklaussee to the Langbathseen lakes is entirely positive. It wasn't just me, Shaggy had fun too. I was able to capture some impressive photos and videos along the way, even though my drone briefly came into contact with a tree - fortunately without any lasting damage. In the future, I plan to circle the lakes and maybe climb the Signalkogel. The whole tour was a great experience and, at around 3 hours, was also easy to manage in terms of time.

There are these days - sometimes several in a row - sometimes with a longer break. Days when I don't know what to do, pack up my girlfriend and my dog and drive to the Langbathsee. The Langbathsee lakes are always worth a visit and no matter when you arrive, you can take a photo from the same vantage point and it always looks different - a unique atmosphere every time!

A running joke in my circle of acquaintances: My Instagram Feed consists of 90 % of Langbathseen photos.

What makes this place so special?

From the mobile phone radio station to the leisurely circular hiking trail and the great photo spots, there is everything you need for a successful short hike. The hiking trail is ideal for families (including those with pushchairs), children and dogs. There are only forest paths, which make for a great hiking experience.

At one point, there is a short and slight ascent - but it is definitely manageable even for less fit hikers and well worth the effort.

ATTENTION: We expressly point out that we accept no liability for accidents or possibly closed paths. Check the availability of the trail before you set off and check your own fitness.

Depending on your pace, it takes around 2 - 3 hours to walk the approx. 8 kilometres, including short breaks. However, you can also shorten the hike and only walk around the front Langbathsee or visit the rear Langbathsee without going round it. This means you can adapt the route to suit your mood and fitness level.

Can you swim in Langbathsee?

There are more than enough bathing opportunities along the Langbath lakes - bathing is also officially permitted. Please note that dogs are not allowed to swim along the sunbathing lawns and in the marked beach area. Don't worry, dear dog owners - it's nicer further back anyway, where the little rascal is also allowed in.

Arrival / start of the circular trail around the Langbath lakes

You can arrive by car or by using the local Traunseetaxi shuttle service. Please note that there is no reception upstairs to call a taxi - you would have to organise this in advance. There are plenty of parking spaces available, but they often fill up relatively quickly. If you arrive early, you will certainly have an advantage in the search. The start is right by the lake at the car park. There is also a free public toilet where you can relieve yourself before the adventure.

Season and time of year

As already mentioned above - the Langbath lakes are a dream at any time of year, at any time of day and in any weather. Just drop by and enjoy.

Please take care not to destroy the cross-country ski trails around the Langbath lakes in winter when there is snow.

Catering and break at the Langbathsee circular trail

If you have your own snack with you, you can rest and enjoy your provisions at the countless beautiful spots around the Langbathsee lakes. If you prefer to stop off somewhere, you can visit the Langbathsee Stüberl at the car park before or after your hike. Please note the Opening hours.
